General characteristics
1 ml of ophthalmic solution contains 3 mg of the active ingredient tobramycin. This broad-acting antibacterial substance belongs to the aminoglycoside group. The drug also contains auxiliary components that do not have any therapeutic effect.
Topical eye drops Tobrex (0.3%) are available in sterile plastic dropper bottles of 5 ml. It is a clear, colorless or light yellow solution. The medication is dispensed from pharmacies without a prescription. There is another version of the drug - Tobrex 2X. The medicine is of a thicker consistency, which is due to the presence of xanthan gum in the composition.
This structure allows the solution to be evenly distributed over the conjunctivitis sac and stay there longer. Thanks to this property, the therapeutic effect of the drug is several times higher than ordinary drops.
Effectiveness for children and adults
Tobrex eye drops are an antibiotic, therefore they are active against certain types of pathogenic microorganisms. The drug inhibits the vital activity of bacteria, preventing their reproduction. The drug is prescribed for adults and children with ophthalmic diseases caused by the following pathogens:
staphylococci;
streptococci;
Pseudomonas aeruginosa;
colibacillus;
protea;
klebsiella;
enterobacter;
shigella.
The antibiotic tobramycin is not active against strains of group D streptococci and some other microorganisms, for example, if the disease is caused by chlamydia and anaerobic bacteria. In this case, select another medicine in the form of drops.
The manufacturer notes the extremely low toxicity of ophthalmic drops. The percentage of the likelihood of a drug solution entering the systemic circulation is negligible. Due to this ability of the drug, it is recommended to use it in the smallest children, including newborns. For infants, the doctor should select the dosage and determine the duration of admission.
Pharmachologic effect
The eye drops have the following pharmacological action:
They cause the death of pathogens that are sensitive to the main antibacterial component of the drug.
Suspend protein synthesis in bacteria (bacteriostatic effect).
They act on the membrane of bacteria, destroying their structure and function.
Sodium chloride, which is part of the composition, has an anti-inflammatory effect.
All of these effects are achieved due to the active substance tobramycin, which has a pronounced antibacterial effect.
Indications for use
Only a pediatric ophthalmologist deals with the treatment of eye diseases in children. Tobrex is prescribed when problems are identified:
various conjunctivitis (inflammation of the mucous membrane of the eyes);
keratitis - inflammation of the cornea of the eyes;
dacryocystitis - blockage of the lacrimal canal;
blepharitis - redness, swelling of the edges of the eyelids where the eyelashes grow;
endophthalmitis - inflammation of the internal structures of the eye;
meibomitis - inflammation of the sebaceous glands of the eyelids;
iridocyclitis - inflammation of the iris and ciliary body of the eyeball;
barley - acute purulent inflammation of the eyelash hair follicle (follicle);
allergic eye diseases (allergic conjunctivitis).
Other indications
Sometimes pediatricians recommend using Tobrex drops for bacterial rhinitis. They are prescribed to drip into the nose of children when green mucous discharge is observed (sinusitis, sinusitis, frontal sinusitis). Tobrex nasal drops are used only with the permission of a doctor.
In addition, the drug is used to prevent complications before and after ophthalmic surgery. The main task is to prevent the development of the inflammatory process in the operated area of the eye.
Drops should not be used for viral eye infections. Only a doctor should prescribe the drug after an accurate diagnosis. This fact is important to consider when treating infants.
Is Tobrex possible for newborns
The drops are highly safe, which guarantees the absence of side effects. The instructions indicate that they can be used to treat eye diseases in children from 1 year of age. Research confirms that the drug is safe and effective for newborns with conjunctivitis. In pediatric practice, they are often prescribed to infants up to 30 days of age.
Instructions for use
The dosage regimen and duration of therapy should be determined by the attending physician. It takes into account the severity of the disease, the age of the patient.
Adults and children over 14 years old
With a moderate inflammatory process, 2 drops are instilled into the conjunctivitis sac every 4 hours. In acute cases - 1-2 drops every hour until the symptoms of the disease decrease. As the inflammation decreases, they switch to the usual dosage regimen (after 4 hours).
Children
The instructions for use for children indicate that you need to instill 1-2 drops in both eyes every 4 hours, or 5 times a day. For patients under the age of 8, the drug is prescribed by an ophthalmologist.
Newborns (up to a year)
Only a specialist should prescribe Tobrex drops to babies. Usually, 1 drop is dripped 5 times a day. In no case should the recommended dosage be exceeded, otherwise the child may experience undesirable consequences.
For both adults and children, the treatment period should not exceed 5-7 days. In some cases, the ophthalmologist increases the duration of use up to 10 days. The attending physician should say exactly how many days the drug can be dripped.
Instillation rules for a newborn
How to properly use Tobrex eye drops for children is indicated in the instructions. When instilling the product in the eyes, the sequence of actions should be followed:
the affected eye is cleaned of mucus or pus with a cotton swab dipped in boiled water;
before instillation, the bottle with the solution is warmed in the palms for several minutes and shaken;
the baby is laid on his back;
gently pull back the lower eyelid;
instill in each eye, without touching the mucous membrane with a bottle-tip;
cover the child's eyelids, lightly massage them;
the remaining solution is removed with a cotton pad.
Then the bottle is closed and stored in a dark place at a temperature of 17-28 degrees. The shelf life of Tobrex is 3 years. The shelf life of the opened drug is no more than 30 days.
Contraindications and side effects
Individual intolerance to at least one component of the drug is the main contraindication to use. It is not recommended to use eye drops during pregnancy and breastfeeding. the effect of the antibiotic tobramycin on the fetus is not fully understood. In such cases, the appropriateness of their use is assessed by an ophthalmologist.
If the instructions for use are not followed, there is a possibility of undesirable effects. These include:
itching, burning eyes;
hyperemia, swelling of the eyelids;
profuse lacrimation;
redness of the mucous membrane;
inflammation of the cornea;
ulcers on the surface of the eyeball (rare);
fungal eye infection (with long-term therapy);
headache.
It is worth noting that these side effects are extremely rare.
The simultaneous use of Tobrex with other antibacterial agents of the same group is not allowed. A high concentration of aminoglycosides can provoke severe complications in newborns, for example, impaired renal function, seizures, hearing loss, and malfunctioning of the circulatory system.
In the event of undesirable consequences, you need to contact an ophthalmologist who will adjust the dosage regimen or select a new drug.

Last year my daughter went to kindergarten for the first time. A week later, a runny nose and cough appeared. The next day I woke up with red eyes and sore ears. She thought she was allergic, because she had never had an infection in her eyes. Pus appeared in the evening. In the morning we went to the doctor and was diagnosed with conjunctivitis. Prescribed Tobrex for eyes and ear drops. I dripped according to the instructions. By the evening, the pus decreased, the redness subsided. And after 3 days from the start of treatment, the daughter's eyes completely recovered. I recommend to all mothers to treat the eyes of children with Tobrex.

I never thought that my baby would get sick right away in the hospital. The pregnancy was going well, there were no prerequisites. But on the second day, the doctor said that the baby's eye turned red and asked to buy Tobrex or Maxitrol. I bought a Tobrex (I heard good reviews about it). The sight was terrible, the swollen eyelid did not allow opening the child's eyes. I was worried, but they calmed me down, they said that it was okay, everything will pass soon. Indeed, on the second day of treatment, the swelling subsided significantly and the eye opened. I am sure that these drops helped, except for them, no medicine was given to the child.

The first time these drops were prescribed to my child when he was 2 years old. Most likely, the son carried the infection while playing in the sand. In the morning, his eyes stuck together so that he could not even open them. I called the pediatrician at home. At first she wanted to prescribe the cheap drug Levomycetin, but then she still stopped at Tobrex. Dropped, as expected - 1 drop in each eye after 4 hours. The course was 5 days. The child did not experience any side effects. This year I treated my husband's sinusitis with the same drops. Only he applied Tobrex in the nose. I heard they are also used to treat ear infections. I was very pleased with the drug.

My seven-year-old granddaughter came to visit me for the holidays. All would be fine, but a week later she fell ill, conjunctivitis appeared. I have known Tobrex drops for a long time, I myself have been treated with them. The only question arose about whether it is possible to drip them to children. In the pharmacy I read the instructions for use. It turned out that you can. I dripped, following the instructions. At the same time I washed my eyes with a weak solution of chamomile and tea leaves. After a couple of days, the pus stopped coming out. I advise everyone to try these eye drops.
