Composition and form of release

The main active ingredient in Prolatan drops is the synthetic hormone latanoprost. The chemical compound is contained in a concentration of 0.05% or 0.05 mg per 1 ml of solution. Auxiliary components listed in the instructions:
    benzalkonium chloride;
    sodium chloride;
    disodium hydrogen phosphate;
    sodium dihydrogen phosphate monohydrate;
    purified water for injection.
The drug does not contain ethyl alcohol and organic compounds. The drops are colorless, do not have a specific odor. They are available in dropper bottles made of transparent soft polyethylene, equipped with a dropper dispenser. The cardboard box protects from the sun's rays, complete with detailed instructions.

Pharmacological properties

The main active ingredient is latanoprost. It is a synthetic isopropyl ether with a chemical formula identical to the hormones prostaglandins. When the eyes are buried, it is distributed over all layers of the pupil and apple, distributed over the cornea, and penetrates through the capillaries to the bottom behind the lens. It stimulates the work of small vessels, which normalizes intraocular pressure.
Drops Prolatan - a complex remedy against glaucoma. Its pharmacological action is based on the ability to gently lower the pressure in the fundus, which reduces the patient's discomfort.
With constant use, it is possible to maintain an optimal level of aqueous humor, and the functioning of the optic nerve is normalized.
Latanoprost is an ether that penetrates deep into the tissues of the eyeball when it gets into the eyeball. It reaches its maximum therapeutic effect 2-3 hours after instillation, decomposes into organic amino acids and compounds. They do not react with human blood components, do not disrupt the work of the respiratory system or the cardiovascular system, if the dosage is observed.

Indications for use

The instruction provides that Prolatan drops are used in the complex treatment of open-angle or chronic angle-closure glaucoma. They are used at any stage of the disease, stopping its further development. The patient's visual acuity is restored, dizziness and pain associated with overstrain in the vessels disappear.
For children over 1 year old, the use of the drug is indicated for congenital glaucoma or increased ophthalmotonus. It is used to reduce intraocular pressure in a young child, trying to postpone the operation until 3-4 years.

Method of administration and dosage

Ophthalmic solution should only be instilled into the conjunctival sac. The instruction recommends use in the evening before bedtime, which enhances the effect, allows the drops to be completely distributed and improves the outflow of excess fluid. It is better to warm the bottle in hands to room temperature, do not touch the mucous membranes with the dispenser.
Instructions for use recommend using Prolatan eye drops as follows:
    Carefully open the protective ring on the bottle with clean hands.
    It is better for the patient to sit on a chair, tilt his head back.
    Slightly pull the lower eyelid with your fingers, drip 1 drop of the drug.
    Close your eyes quickly, press lightly with the pads of your index fingers on the inner corners. This reduces the risk of side effects and discomfort during the procedure.
For children from 1 year old, it is recommended to instill 1 drop, not exceeding the dosage. The duration of treatment depends on the initial diagnosis, examination results, and the patient's age.

Contraindications

Prolatan drops are not recommended for the treatment of infants. This is due to the manufacturer's lack of reliable research results on the safety for the optic nerve of the newborn. The drug should not be used with individual intolerance to active ingredients that can provoke a negative reaction or allergy.
Among the contraindications to the use of drops:
    bronchial asthma;
    aphakia;
    development of macular edema;
    herpetic form of keratitis or keratoconjunctivitis.
The ophthalmic solution is used with caution in case of eye injury: if the posterior capsule of the lens ruptures, the condition may worsen, blood circulation will be disturbed and the pressure will drop to critical levels.
The manufacturer does not recommend the use of drops before ophthalmic cataract surgery, with open surgery on the eyes. With caution and under the supervision of a physician, Prolatan is treated in patients with a high risk of developing uveitis or iritis.

Side effects

After prolonged use of Prolatan drops in patients, there is a violation of the growth of eyelashes along the edge of the eyelid, the appearance of dark spots on the skin, blotches of brown in the structure of the iris. This is due to the effects of the hormonal component. Among the possible side effects indicated in the instructions:
    macular edema;
    iritis;
    deterioration in visual acuity;
    the discomfort;
    diplopia;
    retinal detachment in patients with diabetes mellitus.
In rare cases, hemorrhages in the vitreous body of the eye occur, which negatively affects the ability to see clearly and reduces the effectiveness of treatment. To exclude side effects during a therapeutic course, you must regularly visit your doctor for examination.
The minimum doses of latanoprost penetrate into the blood and tissues of internal organs. With individual intolerance to the active substance, a person may experience severe shortness of breath, which develops into bronchospasm, muscle pain and heart rhythm disturbances.

Overdose

The drug must be taken strictly according to the instructions, 1 drop in each eye. If the recommended dosage is exceeded, the patient aggravates symptoms that resemble an allergic reaction:
    redness of the sclera;
    burning;
    nausea;
    hot flashes;
    headache.
In case of an overdose, it is necessary to stop treatment with Prolatan drops, immediately rinse the eyes with clean water or diluted sodium chloride solution.

Drug interactions

In most cases, Prolatan drops are used as an independent treatment for glaucoma or pressure reduction. In a difficult situation, they are combined with timolol-based beta-blockers to enhance the effect. The drug can be combined with medicines containing epinephrine, pilocarpine, acetazolamide.
When used simultaneously with other eye drops, it is necessary to maintain an interval of at least 5-7 minutes. This will prevent irritation and other side effects from developing. It is recommended to remove the lenses before the procedure.
Prolatan should not be used simultaneously with other drugs based on prostaglandins or the synthetic hormone thiomersal. This threatens the patient with a dangerous overdose, retinal detachment, a sharp drop in vision and painful sensations.

Special instructions

The droplets contain a large volume of benzalkonium chloride, which penetrates into the material of soft lenses, disrupting its structure. They must be removed before each use, put on 15–20 minutes after the procedure.
With the complex treatment of glaucoma, the drug is recommended to be used no more than 1 time per day. An ophthalmologist should adjust the dose increase and course duration. If the condition worsens, hemorrhages appear or the brown pigment increases, he may cancel the solution.
After instillation, the patient's visual acuity decreases, for a while there is clouding. It is not recommended to drive, operate machinery or mechanisms for 30–45 minutes.

Reviews

Elena, 42 years old
I have been using Prolatan drops for more than a year. After being diagnosed with glaucoma, I was offered conservative drug treatment, which should prevent surgery. The situation has really improved, but I am concerned about the side effects of the medication: the second row of eyelashes began to grow on the eyelid, the shade of the iris darkened a little. But the doctor believes that the situation does not require intervention, is not dangerous to health.
Victoria, 51 years old
Prolatan drops were prescribed to my mother for the complex treatment of glaucoma against the background of developing cataracts. This helped to postpone the operation, which the doctors were afraid to carry out for the mother's health. She stopped complaining about blurred eyes, they hurt less and cut after watching TV. The medicine is very good, but it has a high price.
