Release form and composition

Luxfen is packaged in 5 ml vials made of opaque plastic with a dropper nozzle. The medicine is available in the form of a slightly oily solution of greenish-yellow color, the active ingredient is brimonidine tartrate (2 mg / 1 m). Additional components that enhance efficiency and allow even distribution over the scleral surface:
    polyvinyl alcohol;
    sodium hydroxide (or hydrochloric acid);
    benzalkonium chloride;
    sodium chloride;
    distilled water.
The types of auxiliary components may vary. The original drug is manufactured in Lithuania (Sanitas JSC).

Luxfen's action

Brimonidine reduces the production of intraocular secretions, reducing the pressure inside the organ, improves outflow through the uveoscleral pathway. The action begins in 10 minutes: the value of intraocular pressure decreases by 8-12 mm Hg. Art. The greatest effect is achieved after 2 hours and lasts for 12 hours. After 0.5-2.5, the concentration in the blood plasma reaches its maximum values - the rate of distribution depends on the physiological status of the patient and concomitant history.
Systemic absorption is slow, the concentration in the retina, iris and ciliary body, after use for 14 days increases 3-17 times compared to a single application. The half-life is 2 hours. It is metabolized in the liver, the decay products are excreted by the kidneys.

Indications and contraindications

Luxfen is prescribed for the treatment and prevention of open-angle glaucoma and is introduced into a therapeutic course for ophthalmic hypertension (a disease in which the pressure inside the organ of vision increases, but the diagnosis of glaucoma is not confirmed). Due to the combination with other drugs, it stops the increase in intraocular pressure. But it is possible to use it as a monopreparation.
When treating, you must take into account the contraindications specified in the instructions for use. These include:
    intolerance to the active ingredient or additional ingredients;
    age up to 2 years;
    lactation;
    the need to take tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (Befol, Metralindol, Selegilin, Pargilin, Razagilin, Moclobemide and the like).
Allergy symptoms can develop after 2-4 times of use or after several months. The action of the drug is prolonged.

Special instructions

There are conditions in which eye drops are allowed to be used under medical supervision. When the patient is at home, it is recommended to analyze their own feelings, to consult if disturbing symptoms appear during the treatment period.
Assign with caution:
    with persistent hypotension;
    heart failure;
    violation of cerebral circulation;
    obliterating thromboangiitis;
    against the background of emotional instability;
    Raynaud's syndrome.
It is necessary to control the level of blood pressure while taking it with antihypertensive drugs in children and adolescents aged 2 to 18 years.
Luxfen is not compatible with ethanol, so you will have to give up alcohol. The possibility of combination with alcohol-based pharmacological preparations must be consulted with the attending physician. Brimondine increases the effectiveness of opioid drugs, bariturates and anesthetics. It is possible to change the absorption of drugs with adrenaline and norepinephrine, including Reserpine, Methylphenidate, Chlorpromazine. Long-term therapy with eye drops reduces immunity, increases the risk of contracting acute respiratory viral infections and acute respiratory infections during the epidemic season
The use of Luxfen impairs the ability to coordinate due to the development of visual blurriness, you may have to give up driving. With good tolerance, lifestyle correction is not required.
When treating preschoolers with a body weight of up to 20 kg, parents should analyze the condition of the children and, with a decrease in physical activity, notify the doctor. This underweight side effect is reason enough to stop Luxfen.

Possibility of treatment during pregnancy

The effect on the physiological development of fetal systems has not yet been described. Experiments on animals have shown that brimonidine tartrate does not have a negative effect on offspring and does not disrupt the structure of DNA. But since the research has not yet been completed, the decision on the use during pregnancy is made by the attending physician for each patient individually, comparing the risks to the fetus with the benefits to the mother's body.

Side effects

The development of negative symptoms during treatment with Luxfen was noted in 15% of patients. In most cases, they were limited to local manifestations and did not require discontinuation of the drug. There were complaints of short-term redness of the eyelids and sclera, itching and burning.
Signs of conjunctivitis appeared when the dosage or the frequency of administration of the drops was violated, with a sharp discontinuation of treatment. Similar symptoms developed immediately after withdrawal or within several months. Negative manifestations with prolonged use - abscesses (barley) on the eyelids, lacrimation, photophobia.
Possible side effects: nausea, dizziness, heaviness in the head, weakness, lethargy, constant drowsiness, or, conversely, persistent insomnia and restless sleep, dyspepsia. Local allergic manifestations - itchy skin, flushing, rash resembling urticaria.
In case of intolerance in children and adolescents, cyanosis, bradycardia, impaired appetite, severe weakness, decreased concentration and memory functions were noted. But there is a possibility that such symptoms are not associated with Luxfen therapy, but with the underlying diseases for which it is prescribed.

Overdose

In this case, in adults, the severity of side effects increases. Additional symptoms: a decrease in temperature, loss of strength, slow heart rate, apnea, seizures. If it worsens, urgent medical attention is needed. When used correctly, overdose has been reported in isolated cases. The development of an acute condition was diagnosed with accidental oral use.

Luxfen treatment

If you have to wear contact lenses before dripping your eyes, they must be removed. One of the side effects (optional) of short-term inflammation is burning and stinging. A medical accessory on the surface of the sclera increases the unpleasant symptoms. In addition, contact with the solution causes clouding of the lenses. Therefore, you can put them on no earlier than 15-20 minutes after the manipulations.
Regardless of age, the drug is administered 1 drop per day, after an equal amount of time. For preschool children and the elderly, correction of the therapeutic regimen is not required.
The dropper dispenser is brought to a wide-open eye - it is advisable to hold the eyelids of children with your fingers. The medicine is injected at the level of the lower eyelid, approximately in the middle. If you drip into a corner, it will immediately flow out through the lacrimal passage and will not be absorbed in the required dose. As soon as the procedure ends, massage the inner corner of the eye with clean fingers (press several times) for even distribution. When prescribing several types of drugs of similar action, an interval of 10-15 minutes must be maintained between use.

Storage conditions

During storage, it should be protected from children, in a dark place at a temperature not exceeding 25 ° C. The date of issue is indicated on the packaging - shelf life 2 years. After opening the bottle, the drops must be used within 4 weeks.

Reviews

Ophthalmologists and patients have different opinions on the use of Luxfen. Still, it is worth noting that positive reviews prevail:
Tatyana Vasilievna, ophthalmologist
“When treating glaucoma, I take into account not only the effectiveness of the drug, but also the effect on the health of patients. Luxfen is intended for long-term use, so I take into account the risks. Despite the fact that the ratio of those whom the drug helped and patients complaining of side effects was 1: 3, I try not to abuse the drops. Children and the elderly are prescribed drops based on another active ingredient. "
Ivan Sergeevich, ophthalmologist
“The complex action of brimonidine tartrate prevents deterioration and normalizes intraocular pressure. I recommend the drug to my patients, I rarely met complaints about a side effect. Due to the combination of the main and additional ingredients, the improvement is noticeable on day 2. In most cases, people with asthenic constitution complained of weakness. But many refused to replace them, having adjusted their life regime. "
Alexander, 41 years old
“I work as a driver and my eyesight deterioration was taken by surprise. At first he was treated with folk remedies, and when he got to the eye socket, Luxfen was prescribed. A neighbor, who was also dripping the drug, immediately said that it would not suit me. It will feel sick, you can fall asleep on the road. But I decided to try. On the fourth day after application, it became better, the veil before my eyes disappeared. No unpleasant symptoms, I feel great. I've been dripping for 8 months already. "
