Composition and form of release
Glauprost is available in the form of drops with the addition of the active substance latanoprost. The synthetic compound is diluted in water at a concentration of 0.005%. The drug contains auxiliary chemical components:
sodium chloride;
benzalkonium chloride;
sodium dihydrogen phosphate;
disodium hydrogen phosphate.
The composition does not contain ethyl alcohol, dyes and flavors. Ophthalmic drops are sold in a volume of 2.5 ml, packaged in transparent soft polyethylene bottles, have a built-in dropper dispenser. The attached instructions for use contain detailed recommendations for dosage and contraindications.
The healing properties
Ophthalmic medicine contains the synthetic substance latanoprost - an analogue of the natural hormone prostaglandin F2α. When instilled into the eyes, it is distributed over the tissues, penetrates into the fundus, and affects the blood vessels. After 3-4 hours, the natural tone of the capillaries is restored, blood circulation and nutrition are resumed.
Glauprost ophthalmic solution is distinguished by the following pharmacological actions:
lowers intraocular pressure;
improves tissue nutrition;
restores fluid outflow;
improves the conduction of nerve impulses.
After regular use, the patient feels comfortable, the unpleasant feeling of stress and pain disappears. Treatment over 3-6 months under the supervision of a doctor helps to stop the development of glaucoma, prevents surgery and loss of vision.
The maximum effect is observed 3 hours after using Glauprost, the therapeutic effect lasts at least 20-24 hours. The substance improves microcirculation and metabolism in the tissues of the eye, stimulates the flow of nutrients. In ophthalmology, drops can be used as the only medicine in the treatment of diseases at the initial stage.
Indications for use
The main purpose of Glauprost drops is the treatment of glaucoma with increased intraocular pressure. The disease is characterized by the tone of small blood vessels in the fundus, which increases the flow of lymph, disrupted the work of the optic nerve. If the condition persists for a long time, the death of nerve endings occurs, the person loses sight.
The drug Glauprost is used for open-angle glaucoma, helps relieve intraocular pressure in chronic hypertension, after traumatic brain injury or eye surgery. Not used for inflammatory or infectious diseases, for prophylactic purposes.
Contraindications
Glauprost medicinal drops contain a synthetic analogue of the hormone, therefore, it has a number of contraindications for use:
the patient's age is under 18;
individual intolerance to the components;
hypersensitivity to hormones, prostaglandins.
The medicine is not recommended for use after severe injury: a change in intraocular pressure can provoke a rupture of the lens capsule with irreversible consequences. There is insufficient evidence of the effectiveness of Glauprost in the treatment of congenital or inflammatory glaucoma.
Side effects
After eye instillation, the patient may experience a local reaction in the form of eye irritation, which disappears on its own within 15-20 minutes:
burning;
a feeling of sand on the mucous membranes;
soreness.
The course of treatment with Glauprost lasts from 3 to 12 months. Under the influence of the hormonal component, the patient may develop severe side reactions and complications:
keratitis;
blepharitis;
corneal edema;
deterioration of vision;
dizziness;
change in the pigmentation of the iris.
The active substance in the composition of Glauprost drops, with repeated contact with the skin of the eyelid, provokes a change in the direction of eyelash growth, stimulates the appearance of vellus hair, which creates discomfort. Doctors warn about such reactions when using the medicine for more than a year without interruption.
How to take it right
Glauprost eye drops have many positive reviews, but they require strict adherence to the recommendations in the instructions. The optimal dosage, calculated for a middle-aged patient, is just 1 drop of the solution in each eye. It is better to instill it before going to bed, do not read, give up visual stress. If the simultaneous use of an anti-inflammatory drug or antibiotic is required, it is necessary to withstand 10-15 minutes between manipulations.
Care should be taken when wearing contact lenses: active substances can harm the material. Before instilling the eyes, it is better to remove them for 20 minutes, let the Glauprost drops to be distributed over the tissues.
Overdose
If the dose recommended by the doctor is significantly exceeded, the patient may develop a local reaction in the form of redness, irritation, and swelling of the eyelids. In such a situation, the eyes should be rinsed with saline, and consult a hospital.
Signs of overdose often appear when used simultaneously with other drugs with a similar composition based on latanoprost or synthetic prostaglandins. With increased exposure, the opposite effect is observed: intraocular pressure rises, headaches, tingling, burning sensation occur. Glauprost solution is not compatible with drugs containing thiomersal.
Reviews of doctors and patients
The use of the eye drops is allowed only after a visual examination, accurate diagnosis. In most cases, doctors recommend the drug to middle-aged and older patients who need to maintain visual acuity without surgery.
Doctors have no confirmed data on the safety of Glauprost during pregnancy, the effect on the formation of the embryo and the immature organism of the newborn. Therefore, during lactation, safer drugs are selected, proven by long-term observations.
Victor, 41 years old
Two years ago I was diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma. After the diagnosis, the ophthalmologist prescribed the drops in a course of 3 months. The first two weeks after instillation there was dizziness, redness. Gradually, the unpleasant sensations disappeared, but vision really improved, they stopped cutting eyes in the evening. I continue treatment under the supervision of a doctor, and I am satisfied with the results.
Evgeniya, 43 years old
Mom has been suffering from hypertension for many years, and she began to complain that her eyesight has fallen badly in the last month. After consulting an ophthalmologist, they received a disappointing diagnosis - glaucoma with increased intraocular pressure. Glauprost drops began to be used in combination with other drugs. The instruction contained many warnings, but the mother was satisfied with the treatment: she began to see clearly, the cloudy film practically disappeared.
