Composition and form of release
A drug for the treatment of eye diseases is produced in the form of a colorless liquid, without impurities or sediment. The Ocumed drops contain the following components:
timolol;
benzalkonium chloride;
sodium dihydrogen phosphate;
sodium hydrogen phosphate.
The product is water-based without the addition of alcohol or dyes. The solution is packed in a dark glass bottle, hermetically sealed with a stopper with an aluminum top. A special dropper complements the set, allowing you to easily dispense liquid at home when instilling the eyes. The instruction contains information on dosage and method of administration.
Pharmacological properties
The main active ingredient in the composition of the drug is timolol maleate. It is a blocker of adrenergic receptors, which provoke the production of a hormone that increases the tone of the capillaries. The synthetic compound is used externally, after instillation it penetrates into the fundus. By normalizing the work of blood vessels, it gently reduces high blood pressure.
As a result of the action of timolol, intraocular pressure is normalized. The puffiness ceases to compress the optic nerve. This restores visual acuity, allowing you to get rid of the sensation of a film or foreign body, reduces fatigue and strain.
The decrease in intraocular pressure begins 20–25 minutes after eye instillation.
Within 1–3 hours, the indicators normalize, timolol accumulates in the anterior chamber at its maximum concentration. With regular use, the effect lasts for a day.
The main active ingredient enters the systemic circulation, can affect the work of the circulatory system, provoke an increased tone of the vascular walls. Therefore, before use, you must carefully study the instructions, check the list of contraindications.
Indications for use
Medicinal drops Ocumed are used in the complex treatment of glaucoma. With increased intraocular pressure, they remove fluid that presses on the optic nerve. This restores the blood circulation process, improves the nutrition of the organ of vision. Among the indications for the use of an ophthalmic drug:
open-angle and closed-angle forms of glaucoma;
increased intraocular pressure;
secondary form of glaucoma;
congenital pathologies of the optic nerve.
When treating, Ocumed drops are combined with other drugs, complementing therapeutic methods for reducing pressure. The medicine is used only as directed by a doctor who monitors the state of blood vessels, corneal epithelium.
Method of administration and dosage
Care must be taken when instilling eyes. Before the procedure, it is recommended to thoroughly wash your hands with soap, wipe the dropper of the dispenser with a disinfectant solution. For convenience, you can sit in a chair, place a roller under your head for support.
Instructions for the use of Ocumed drops contain the following recommendations:
At the initial stage of glaucoma or with a sharp increase in intraocular pressure, inject 1 drop in the morning and evening. For the treatment of children over 10 years old and adult patients at this stage, a solution with a concentration of 0.25% of the active substance is recommended.
If there is no effect, the dosage is increased to 1 drop 2 times a day using a more saturated solution with a timolol content of 0.5%. The duration of treatment is calculated by the doctor based on the measurements of intraocular pressure.
After the restoration of optimal parameters, it is recommended to continue treatment according to the scheme of 1 drop per day with a solution of 0.25% or 0.5%.
Ocumed drops should be used for several months without interruption. With positive dynamics and the absence of side effects, treatment is allowed for a longer period.
Contraindications
The active substance timolol enters the body, acts on the capillaries and veins that feed the internal organs. In case of impaired blood flow, chronic diseases and congenital pathologies can be aggravated. The following diagnoses are considered absolute contraindications to treatment with Ocumed drops:
acute heart failure;
rhinitis with atrophy of mucous membranes and receptors;
sinus bradycardia;
severe forms of allergic dermatitis;
bronchial asthma, requiring hormonal drugs;
degeneration of the retina and cornea.
With increased caution and strictly according to the prescription of an ophthalmologist, Ocumed drops are allowed to be used for the following diseases:
chronic diseases of the broncho-pulmonary system, emphysema;
blockade of sinus rhythm;
low blood pressure;
diabetes;
Raynaud's syndrome;
pathology of the thyroid gland;
hormonal imbalance.
With relative contraindications, Ocumed drops are allowed for use if the benefits of treatment outweigh the possible risks. During therapy, control measurements of intraocular pressure are taken.
Side effects
When treating with drops, care should be taken: timolol enters the bloodstream, can provoke an exacerbation of chronic diseases. Side effects often occur with hypersensitivity to the components. After instillation, tearing, redness and swelling of the eyelids begins.
With prolonged use, the side effect of Ocumed can manifest itself in the following form:
swelling of the nasopharynx, rhinitis, spasms of the larynx and bronchi;
a sharp drop in blood pressure;
violation of the heart rhythm;
chest pain;
cutaneous eczema;
rashes, dermatitis;
indigestion, vomiting, loose stools;
hair loss;
problems with potency in men.
In the treatment of glaucoma, there is a risk of developing keratopathy, blepharitis, hemorrhages in the sclera. When used after ophthalmic surgery, retinal detachment occurs in rare cases.
Overdose
Using Ocumed drops, the recommended dosage should be strictly observed. Otherwise, an allergic reaction occurs with characteristic symptoms:
headaches;
weakness;
nausea;
breathing disorder.
If a negative reaction occurs, you must take an antihistamine, rinse your eyes with a weak solution of sodium chloride, and then repeat the procedure with clean cool water. To exclude bronchospasm, it is better to go to the hospital.
Drug interactions
The components of Ocumed drops act on adrenergic blockers, therefore, the simultaneous instillation of drugs with a similar composition and principle of action is prohibited. Otherwise, an allergic reaction develops, a temporary decrease in visual acuity occurs.
It is not recommended to combine drops with the following medicines:
solutions containing pilocarpine, epinephrine;
calcium channel blockers for hypertension;
muscle relaxants.
When using general anesthesia, it is recommended to cancel Ocumed drops 2 days before surgery. The drug can worsen the patient's condition when taken simultaneously with insulin in diabetes mellitus.
Special instructions
With long-term treatment with drops, intraocular pressure should be measured 1-2 times a month. Otherwise, you can miss the deterioration of vision, impaired blood supply to the cornea. When switching from miotic drugs, refraction correction is additionally performed.
Ophthalmic solution is not recommended for use with rigid contact lenses. The material actively absorbs the preservatives in the drops, which provokes deformation and deterioration.
When using soft lenses, they should be removed before the procedure, put on only after 10–20 minutes.
Reviews
Victoria, 48 years old
Disturbed by severe pain in the right eye. After the diagnosis, I found out that this is how intraocular pressure manifests itself. The doctor prescribed Ocumed drops 2 times a day for a month. The unpleasant sensations practically disappeared, the eyesight improved. I drip strictly according to the instructions, I did not have any side effects. After the last examination and positive dynamics, I switched to a dosage of 0.25%, I continue the treatment and hope for good results.

Mom was diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma. In order not to permanently lose sight, the doctor recommended daily dripping of the eyes with Ocumed. Despite the age, it is convenient for my mother to use the medicine: the manufacturer has described in detail on the box how to open the bottle. After six months, she continues treatment, says that she does not feel pain or discomfort.
Yuri, 51
On the recommendation of a doctor, I decided to undergo surgery for glaucoma. But it had to be postponed due to high intraocular pressure. Ocumed used drops 2 times a day for a month. After the control examination, the results are pleasing, the pain and burning sensation disappeared, the feeling of a film disappeared.
