Form, composition of the drug

The active ingredients in Ganfort drops are represented by two synthetic substances - timolol maleate and bimatoprost. Additionally, the composition includes:
    sodium salt of hydrochloric acid;
    benzalkonium chloride;
    sodium phosphate;
    citric acid;
    hydrochloric acid;
    sodium hydroxide;
    distilled water.
The ophthalmic agent is a sterile, clear, odorless solution. Drops are packaged in dropper bottles made of durable polyethylene with a volume of 3 ml. One branded carton pack contains 1 or 3 bottles. A package insert with the characteristics of the preparation is attached to the package.

Therapeutic action

A pronounced decrease in intraocular pressure is provided by two active substances:
    Bimatoprost is a synthetic analogue of the endogenous prostaglandin F2α, which has structural and chemical similarities with it. A decrease in intraocular pressure is provided by increasing the outflow of water moisture from the eye. The substance is a potent ophthalmic antihypertensive agent.
    Timolol is a non-selective β-adrenergic receptor antagonist. It has no internal sympathomimetic and membrane stabilizing activity. When applied topically, it reduces both normal and increased IOP by reducing the formation of intraocular fluid.
The main task of Ganfort drops is to reduce intraocular pressure and control the formation of intraocular fluid. The therapeutic effect occurs 30 minutes after instillation and lasts 24 hours.
With topical application of drops, systemic absorption is minimal and not clinically significant. Bitatoprost is predominantly excreted by the kidneys, timolol is metabolized in the liver and excreted by the gastrointestinal tract.

Indications for appointment

Ophthalmic agent Ganfort is designed to reduce intraocular pressure. Open-angle glaucoma is a direct indication for the use of the drug. It is a chronic eye disease with a tendency to progression, which is characterized by increased intraocular pressure and damage to the optic nerve. Pathology requires immediate treatment.
Ganfort drops are also prescribed for intraocular hypertension, when therapy with beta-blockers and prostaglandin analogs does not bring a positive result. In this case, the effect of the drug is easy to explain. Ganfort contains active ingredients from both groups that complement each other. As a result of this interaction, the desired therapeutic effect is achieved.

Contraindications to the appointment

The components included in the composition of the drug determine not only its effectiveness, but also contraindications. Ganfort drops have the following number of prohibitions:
    intolerance to at least one component of the drops;
    bronchial asthma;
    exacerbation of broncho-pulmonary diseases;
    severe heart failure;
    cardiogenic shock (extreme degree of left ventricular failure);
    a heart rate of less than 60 beats per minute (bradycardia);
    violation of the conduction of an electrical impulse from the atria to the ventricles (atrioventricular block);
    age under 18;
    the period of pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Diabetes mellitus, angle-closure and congenital glaucoma, eye inflammation, renal and hepatic failure, impaired glucose tolerance are conditions in which drops are prescribed carefully.
Also, patients with a risk of macular edema require special attention. If a medication has been prescribed to such persons, then therapy should be supervised by the attending physician.

Method of use

Ganfort eye drops are used topically to treat children over 18 years of age and adults (including the elderly). The instructions for use indicate the standard scheme for all patients with glaucoma - 1 drop in each conjunctivitis sac 1 time per day. Instillation should be done in the morning. It is prohibited to exceed the recommended dosage, because the drug has a prolonged effect.
After the procedure, you must blink thoroughly for a few seconds. This will help distribute the drug solution evenly.

    headache;
    swelling and soreness of the eyelids;

    dry eye syndrome;
    hemorrhage in the retina;

    cystic macular edema;
    blepharitis, asthenopia, trichiasis;

    sleep disturbance.
In addition, if side effects on topical medications with bimatoprost or timolol in the composition were previously noted, they may also additionally manifest themselves in the treatment with Ganfort drops.
There is no official data on overdose. Most likely, it develops with non-compliance with the dosage regimen. Perhaps an overdose manifests itself in the form of increased side effects. At the slightest suspicion of an overdose, an urgent need to consult a doctor.

Reviews

Dmitry Sergeevich, 66 years old
Ganfort was prescribed by an optometrist for glaucoma. He said that only this drug has the most powerful combination of substances that reduce eye pressure. Indeed, the disease stopped, the deterioration was not recorded. The doctor postponed the operation. If no side effects appear, then we continue treatment. I hope the medicine will help me cope with glaucoma.
Varvara Mikhailovna, 50 years old
I am concerned about high intraocular pressure. The drug Ganfort helps to keep the indicators normal, I use it according to the instructions 1 time per day. I regularly visit an ophthalmologist to monitor the state of the cornea. The drops are very good but expensive. But the positive dynamics covers this shortcoming.
Tatiana, 47 years old
I have been using drops for a year now, eye pressure is normal. For the first 6 months, no undesirable consequences appeared. But literally a month ago I felt an unpleasant noise in my ears. I read the instructions, where ear noise is a possible side effect. I went to the doctor who recommended changing the remedy. I was very upset because drops help very well. We'll have to look for their medicine again, it's a shame.
