Composition and form of release

Ophthalmic agent Travatan is an opalescent liquid for instillation into the eyes, colorless, odorless. A slightly yellowish tint is possible, which does not affect the medicinal properties of the drug. The active substance of the drops is a chemical compound - travoprost. In 1 ml of liquid, 40 μg of the substance is present. Additionally, the composition of the eye drops includes components that improve absorption, the effect of travoprost and preserve the shelf life of the product:
    propylene glycol;
    macrogol glyceryl hydroxystearate;
    boric acid;
    propylene glycol;
    mannitol;
    sodium chloride;
    purified water;
    sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid (the composition may contain both two substances and one);
    polydronium chloride.
The solution is poured into dropper bottles made of polypropylene. The volume of one bottle of Travatan is 2.5 ml. The drug is sealed in a foil bag, cardboard box with instructions inside.

Pharmachologic effect

Eye drops Travatan belong to antiglaucoma ophthalmic agents. The active substance is a synthetic analogue of prostaglandin F2a. Travoprost reduces intraocular pressure, which is one of the causes of glaucoma. The therapeutic effect is achieved by increasing the rate of outflow of aqueous humor through the trabecular network, uveoscleral pathways.
The active substance selectively stimulates the receptors of the ciliary body, facilitating the outflow of fluid inside the eye, located between the cornea and the lens. This mechanism of action reduces intraocular pressure. Drops of Travatan do not affect the production of intraocular fluid. High pressure begins to decrease approximately 2 hours after instillation. The peak of the drug's action occurs after 12 hours. After a single instillation, the reduced pressure can persist for up to 1 day.

Pharmacokinetics

Travoprost penetrates into the cornea of the eye, enters into a hydrolysis reaction, turning into a biologically active form in the form of free acid. Its maximum level in blood plasma is detected 15-25 minutes after instillation in an amount of 25 pg / ml or less. The chemical is quickly removed from the blood plasma; within 60 minutes, its level decreases to a threshold that cannot always be detected from 10 pg / ml and below.
It was not possible to establish the exact time of elimination of the ophthalmic drug, since its presence in the total blood flow is extremely small. The way of excretion of the active substance occurs due to its metabolic process, which is similar to the metabolism of endogenous prostaglandin. Travoprost in the form of free acid, together with metabolites, is eliminated from the body through the kidneys with urine.

Indications, contraindications for use

Drops of Travatan are prescribed for open-angle glaucoma, increased ophthalmotonus in combination with high intraocular pressure in people over 18 years old. Restrictions on use:
    breast-feeding;
    pregnancy;
    age under 18;
    hypersensitivity, individual intolerance to chemicals in the eye drops.
Caution when using is necessary for people with aphakia, pseudophakia against the background of a ruptured lens membrane or intraocular lens. Drops are prescribed with caution when there is a high likelihood of cystic macular edema, iritis, uveitis, acute inflammatory eye diseases.

Instructions for the use of drops Travatan

The product is intended only for local use - instillation in the eyes. The standard dosage is 1 drop into the conjunctival sac 1 time per day in the evening or before bedtime. In order to maintain a therapeutic dose of the active substance in the eye, it is recommended that instillation be carried out at the same time. If the instillation is missed, the next time 1 drop is instilled, there is no need to increase the amount. No more than 1 drop is added per day. The duration of treatment is determined by the ophthalmologist.
To reduce the likelihood of negative systemic reactions, after instillation, it is recommended to lightly press the nasolacrimal canal in the area of the inner corner of the eye (closer to the bridge of the nose).
Thus, the amount of active substance entering the total blood flow will decrease, and its level in the eye will increase. In case of impaired renal and liver function of any severity, dose adjustment is not required.
Before instillation, you should wash your hands with soap and water. Tilt your head back slightly, pull the lower eyelid slightly downward, add 1 drop of Travatan. During the procedure, it is not recommended to touch the tip of the bottle to the eyelashes, eyelids, skin or touch it with your hands, otherwise pathogenic flora may enter, the solution may become contaminated. In order for the drug to be evenly distributed over the surface of the eye, it is necessary to make circular movements with the eyeballs or quickly blink.

The use of Travatan in pregnant women, lactating

The manufacturer indicates in the instructions that data on the effect of Travatan on the body of a pregnant woman, a fetus are absent or limited in access. Given this fact, pregnant women, breastfeeding women should avoid contact with these substances so that they do not get on the skin. In case of contact, rinse the area with plain tap water. Studies on the effect of drops on human fertility, the state of the fetus have not been carried out, experiments on animals have not shown negative reactions. In an animal study of the active component, travoprost, data were obtained on the adverse effect on reproductive function.
Since there is no data confirming the safety of Travatan drops for pregnant women, lactating women, it is prohibited to use the product for this category of people. If during the feeding period, the use of drops is necessary, the baby is transferred to artificial feeding. To maintain lactation, milk is expressed. Reviews

Marina Konstantinovna, 55 years old
Open-angle glaucoma was discovered in the early stages, according to the results of studies, intraocular pressure was greatly increased. The ophthalmologist wrote out a prescription for Travatan drops and 2 more drugs. The remedy is of course expensive, the doctor said that if 3 remedies are used in combination, surgical treatment can be avoided. 3 months have passed after the treatment, the pressure does not increase, the vision does not deteriorate. There were no side effects.
Ekaterina, 24 years old
Travatan drops were prescribed to my grandmother to reduce intraocular pressure, to stop the development of angular glaucoma. Her eyesight is poor, so I buried the drops in her. After the first procedure, she said that her vision became worse, after 20 minutes her vision was restored. In the future, there was no such reaction. After treatment, she underwent an examination by an ophthalmologist, blood pressure is normal.
