Description and composition

The main active ingredient of the drug Novobismol is bismuth oxide in the form of tripotassium dicitrate, its content in 1 tablet is 120 mg. It also includes the following auxiliary compounds:
    Povidone.
    Magnesium stearate.
    Potassium Polyacrylate.
    Corn starch.
    Macrogol 6000.

Pharmacological group

Novobismol refers to anti-ulcer drugs derived from bismuth. The active component of the drug in the acidic environment of the stomach cavity turns into insoluble bismuth compounds oxychloride and citrate, as well as chelate complexes with protein structures, forming a protective film. It protects an ulcer or erosion of the mucous membrane from negative influences, in particular from the irritating effect of gastric juice and promotes the speedy tissue regeneration. The drug also has several additional therapeutic effects that contribute to the protection of the mucous membrane of the stomach and duodenum:
An increase in the synthesis of biologically active compounds of prostaglandin E in tissues, which is a major factor in the protection of the mucous membrane.
Stimulation of the production of mucus, which protects the walls of the hollow organs of the digestive system from negative influences.
Increasing the resistance of the mucous membrane to the irritating effect of hydrochloric acid and pepsin of gastric juice.
Increased activity of cytoprotective mechanisms in tissues.
Novobismol contributes to the accumulation of growth factors in the area of damaged tissues, due to which their regeneration is accelerated. Bismuth has a bactericidal effect and leads to the death of specific bacteria Helicobacter pilory, which are one of the main reasons for the development of peptic ulcer.
After taking the pill inside, the active substance has therapeutic effects in the lumen of the stomach and duodenum. It is practically not absorbed into the systemic circulation and is excreted unchanged with feces.

Interaction with other drugs

With the simultaneous administration of Novobismol tablets with liquid, food (dairy products, fruits, vegetables) and some medicines (antacids to reduce the acidity of gastric juice), the effectiveness of the active component decreases.

Special instructions

Before you start taking the drug, you should pay attention to several special instructions, which include:
Do not use Novobismol for more than 8 weeks.
If you need to prescribe a second course of therapy after taking the pills, you should take a break. At the same time, the use of any medicines containing bismuth is excluded.
During the course of therapy, it is important to adhere to the correct dosage and not to exceed it, especially against the background of the use of the drug in childhood.
Against the background of the course of therapy, darkening of the stool (the result of the formation of bismuth sulfide salts in the intestinal lumen) and tongue can be noted. This is not a reason for discontinuing Novobismol.

Overdose

Overdose is possible with prolonged use of tablets in high dosages. In this case, the functional state of the liver, kidneys, and also structures of the central nervous system is disturbed, which is manifested by a variety of clinical symptoms. When the first signs of an overdose appear, the corresponding symptomatic treatment is carried out. It includes washing the stomach, intestines, the use of intestinal sorbents and saline laxatives. With a pronounced decrease in the functional activity of the kidneys, hemodialysis is prescribed (hardware-based blood purification).
