TheraFlu LAR is an antimicrobial and anesthetic drug for local use in dentistry and otolaryngology.

Release form and composition

Dosage forms of the drug TheraFlu LAR:
    lozenges: biconvex, round, on one side the Zyma logo is applied in the form of two triangles located symmetrically with some offset, the code “OR” on the other; large white tablets with a yellowish tint that have a pleasant orange aroma (8 pcs. in blisters, in packs of cardboard 1, 2 or 3 blisters).
Composition for 1 tablet TheraFlu LAR:
    active components: benzoxonium chloride - 1 mg; lidocaine hydrochloride - 1 mg;
    auxiliary ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, sodium chloride, sodium saccharinate, sorbitol, macrogol 6000, corn starch, magnesium stearate, citric acid, orange flavor.
The content in one tablet of sweetener (in the form of sorbitol) is 1 g, which corresponds to an energy value of ~ 4 kcal, or 17 kJ.

Pharmacodynamics

Active components of TheraFlu LAR:
    benzoxonium chloride: N-benzyl N-dodecyl N, N-di (2-hydroxyethyl) ammonium chloride - salts of tetra-substituted ammonium (quaternary ammonium bases), which have membrane-active activity due to the cationic structure and have a pronounced antibacterial effect against gram-positive and gram-negative (to a lesser extent degree) microorganisms; the substance also has antimycotic and antiviral activity against membrane viruses, including herpes, influenza and parainfluenza viruses;
    lidocaine hydrochloride: a local anesthetic that reduces pain during inflammation in the throat during swallowing.

Pharmacokinetics

    benzoxonium chloride: practically not absorbed into the systemic circulation and is not detected in the blood, its accumulation in the tissues of the body is also not detected; about 1% of the dose received is determined in the urine;
    lidocaine hydrochloride: absorbed when it enters the mucous membrane of the oral cavity; the metabolism of a substance occurs by first passing through the liver; oral bioavailability is ~ 35%; lidocaine metabolites are excreted by the kidneys; less than 10% of the active substance is excreted unchanged.

Indications for use

TheraFlu LAR is recommended for topical treatment of such infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx such as laryngitis, pharyngitis, catarrhal tonsillitis, ulcerative gingivitis, stomatitis. The drug is also included in the complex therapy of chronic tonsillitis as an adjuvant.

Contraindications

    pregnancy period (for tablets - I trimester);
    breastfeeding (lactation);
    children under 4 years old;
    individual hypersensitivity to ammonia compounds and any of the components of the drug.

Instructions for use TheraFlu LAR: method and dosage

TheraFlu LAR is applied topically in the oral cavity. The tablets are slowly resorbed until completely dissolved. Spray using a special device is sprayed in the oral cavity, holding the can vertically.
Recommended Dosage:
    children aged 4 years and older: 1 tablet every 2-3 hours or 2-3 spray sprays from 3 to 6 times a day; maximum daily dose - 6 tablets;
    adult patients: 1 tablet every 2-3 hours or 4 sprays (~ 0.5 ml) from 3 to 6 times a day; with severe symptoms of the disease, 1 tablet is allowed every 1-2 hours; The maximum daily dose is 10 tablets.
The duration of the course of therapy is no more than 5 days.
If there is no relief of the symptoms of the disease within 5 days of using the drug, the patient should certainly consult a doctor.

Side effects

    reactions at the place of use: infrequently - irritation that is transient; continuous use of the drug for more than two weeks can cause reversible pigmentation of the tongue or teeth in brown;
    hypersensitivity reactions: in isolated episodes - swelling of the face, urticaria, swelling of the larynx.

Overdose

Overdose symptoms in case of accidental ingestion of high doses of the drug inside (as in the case of other ammonium compounds) may be nausea and / or vomiting. Lidocaine in the drug is contained in a small amount, and therefore its overdose is unlikely.
In case of an overdose of TheraFlu LAR, it is recommended to drink milk or egg whipped in water.

During therapy, avoid drinking alcohol.

Pregnancy and lactation

Since adequate and strictly controlled clinical studies of the use of the drug during pregnancy have not been conducted, there is no data on its safety and effectiveness in this group of patients. In this regard, TheraFlu LAR tablets are contraindicated for use in the first trimester of pregnancy; in the second and third trimesters, their use should be avoided. Spray TheraFlu LAR is prohibited for use throughout the gestation period.
There are no clinical data on the excretion of TheraFlu LAR active substances with breast milk. Nevertheless, it is not recommended to use the drug during lactation.

Use in childhood

According to the instructions, TheraFlu LAR is contraindicated in children under 4 years of age. In children over 4 years of age, the drug is used according to the indications according to the recommended dosage regimen.

Drug interaction

In the case of simultaneous use with funds with anionic activity, for example, with toothpaste, the effectiveness of benzoxonium chloride decreases.
Ethanol increases the absorption of benzoxonium chloride, so alcohol should be avoided during treatment.
