Composition and form of release
Ear drops are produced in the form of a colorless or slightly yellowish transparent solution, the smell is specific - "medical". Packing - 10 ml glass vials with a lid with a built-in pipette-dropper. Packaging - cardboard, each contains instructions for use.
Active ingredients: boric acid, procaine hydrochloride. In 1 ml drops - 30 and 20 mg, respectively. Additional ingredients that are both antiseptics and preservatives are ethyl alcohol, sodium hydroxide in the form of a solution.
Otolorin action
The effect of a drug with moderate anesthetic activity is provided by two active components that reinforce each other:
procaine hydrochloride is an anesthetic that blocks sodium channels, stops the generation of impulses in the nerve fibers of cells without a pronounced effect on the resting potential;
boric acid - inhibits the activity of pathogenic bacteria and fungi, has an irritating effect at the site of instillation.
Boric acid has an accelerated absorption. Absorption is accelerated when the epithelium is damaged.
The half-life (T ½) is 12 hours, 50% is excreted by the kidneys, the rest - within 5-7 days after a single use of Otolorin. With systemic instillations, it accumulates.
Procaine is completely absorbed. The degree of absorption depends on the route of administration, dose and blood flow rate in this area. It is rapidly hydrolyzed by plasma esterases, has a moderate vasodilating effect (PABA is a competitive antagonist of sulfonamide chemotherapeutic drugs, as a result of which their antimicrobial effect is weakened). T ½ in adults - 30-50 seconds, in infants - 54-114 seconds. It is excreted by the kidneys - no more than 2% is removed in its original form, everything else is in the form of metabolites.
Indications and contraindications
Assign to adults and children with external acute and chronic otitis media. Contraindications to treatment:
violation of the integrity of the tympanic membrane, perforation due to illness or traumatic injury;
children's age - up to 1 year;
period of breastfeeding.
Ear drops are not prescribed for chronic renal failure, regardless of the severity of the disease.
Boric acid is excreted by the kidneys, and when it accumulates in organs and tissues, it has a toxic effect. Allergic reactions can cause the active ingredients individually or due to a joint effect.
Instructions for use
To avoid discomfort at the time of instillation of the drug, it is better to heat the bottle by holding it in a fist for several minutes. Adults can tilt their heads, while children are best placed on their side. after the procedure, it is better to lie down for a few minutes so that the medicine does not leak out. If a tampon moistened with a solution is inserted into the ear, there is no need to change the position.
Dosage for patients from 1 to 12 years old - 1-2 drops in each ear canal, 2-3 times a day. For adults, the amount of the drug is increased - 2-3 drops, the frequency of administration is the same. The duration of the therapeutic course is no more than a week.
Side effects and overdose
At the installation site, irritation may appear in the form of itching, burning, painful sensations. If they disappear within a few seconds after administration, treatment is not stopped.
In some cases, allergic reactions were noted: redness and discomfort, which did not disappear for a long time. For example, a rash, both at the injection site and on other parts of the skin. In rare cases, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, convulsions appeared. Very rarely - convulsions, urinary retention, anaphylactic shock, Quincke's edema. Such side effects are more likely to occur with increasing dosage or prolonged use.
Administration in case of perforation of the tympanic membrane increases the possibility of severe side effects in the form of skin reactions. Development of deafness, nausea, vomiting, impaired coordination is possible. In some cases, a disorder of consciousness occurs.
In children, accelerated metabolism - the drug solution is absorbed faster. Before instillation, you need to carefully check for damage to the epithelium, including micro-scratches or micro-cracks. Fatalities have been reported when applied to the wound surface or accidentally taken orally. No antidote has been developed for the drug. If swallowed, call an ambulance. Therapy is symptomatic.

Reviews about Otolorin
Doctors often prescribe Otolorin to relieve pain in otitis media and to suppress inflammation. Patients leave the following reviews for ear drops:
Sergey, 26 years old
My ear hurt badly, so I had to see a doctor. I was very surprised to learn that there was some kind of fungal flora in my ears. I didn't think this was possible. After Otolorin started dripping, the pain went away immediately, and after 3 days I forgot about the disease.
Petr Ivanovich, 57 years old
The drug is effective, it is convenient to inject, the pain went away immediately. I just don't understand why such large bubbles, if you can drip for no longer than a week? The money, though not big, is a pity.
