Pharmacodynamics

Mirofuril is an antimicrobial drug that has a wide range of bacteriostatic effects. When used in high doses, it has a bactericidal effect. Its active substance, nifuroxazide, is a derivative of 5-nitrofuran. The antimicrobial activity of nifuroxazide is due to the presence of an NO2 group in its composition, which blocks the activity of dehydrogenase, inhibition of the respiratory chain, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and a number of other biochemical processes, which leads to impaired protein synthesis in pathogenic bacteria.
Against the background of the use of the drug, the production of toxins by microorganisms decreases, the membranes of microbial cells are destroyed. Reception of nifuroxazide does not lead to the emergence of resistant strains or cross-resistance with other antibacterial agents. The therapeutic effect of nifuroxazide is not dependent on pH in the intestinal lumen and the susceptibility of microorganisms to antibiotics.
The following pathogenic intestinal bacteria exhibit high sensitivity to nifuroxazide: Staphylococcus speciales (spp.), Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Campylobacter jejuni, Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens, Vibrions and Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrioce.
Nifuroxazide shows weak activity against Enterobacter cloacae, Citrobacter spp., Proteus indologenes.
Nifuroxazide is resistant to Klebsiella spp., Providencia spp., Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas spp.
In acute diarrhea of bacterial etiology, the drug helps to restore intestinal eubiosis. It prevents the development of bacterial superinfection when infected with enterotropic viruses.
Nifuroxazide does not affect the saprophytic flora and does not upset the balance of the normal intestinal flora.

Pharmacokinetics

After ingestion, nifuroxazide is almost not absorbed from the digestive tract and does not enter the systemic circulation. The antibacterial effect is realized exclusively in the intestinal lumen. It is completely excreted through the intestines (unchanged - 20%).
