Composition

Maxitrol drops belong to the group of aminoglycosides - new generation antibiotics with minimal side effects. It contains three effective components:
    Neomycin sulfate: affects many groups of bacteria, destroys them at any stage of development. Easily penetrates the tissues of the organ of vision, stopping the infection after just a few instillations.
    Dexamethasone glucocorticosteroid: the active substance belongs to hormones. It reduces the severity of inflammation, improves fluid outflow and normalizes blood circulation in tissues, stimulates the flow of nutrients.
    Polymyxin B sulfate: a type of antibiotic that inhibits the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and E. coli, a rare species of Koch-Weeks.
This combination has created a potent agent that is effective in the treatment of complex infections. As auxiliary components and preservatives, Maxitrol contains: sodium chloride, purified water, benzalkonium chloride solution, polysorbate.

Release form

Maxitrol drops are produced by the manufacturer in a convenient 5 ml bottle made of dense opaque plastic. It is equipped with a special dropper dispenser, which helps to gently instill the eyes at the correct dosage without additional help, without spilling the solution.
For the treatment of inflammation and barley on the outer edge of the eyelids, Maxitrol ophthalmic ointment is produced.
It has a completely identical composition and anti-inflammatory effect. A metal tube with a volume of 3.5 g is packed in a cardboard box, supplied with detailed instructions for use and dosage.

Pharmachologic effect

The combined antibiotic is recommended by ophthalmologists in the treatment of infections caused by the following groups of bacteria:
    colibacillus;
    staphylococcal;
    streptococcal of low pathogenic type;
    proteas;
    hemophilic and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Due to the complex formula, drops are classified as local preparations with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects, they are not used as a preventive medicine.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

After entering the tissues of the eye, the neomycin component disrupts protein synthesis in the bacterial cell. It interrupts the division process, stops the spread of infection to healthy areas. Polymyxin b inhibits the growth of colonies, cleansing from pathogenic microflora, stimulates local immunity.
The addition of dexamethasone makes the medicine an excellent remedy for eye tissue puffiness in case of allergies. It normalizes intraocular pressure and stabilizes blood circulation after injury. In combination with antibiotics, the hormone quickly blocks the inflammatory process at any stage, helping to preserve vision, protecting the body from secondary infection.
The solution is intended for topical use. When instilled into the eyes, it is practically not absorbed into the bloodstream, and remains effective for at least 6 hours after the procedure.
Maxitrol is characterized by low absorption, it is quickly excreted from the body in the urine within 24 hours.

Indications for use

Maxitrol - eye drops with a mild decongestant and healing effect. The solution relieves burning, discomfort, irritation and itching during an exacerbation of seasonal allergies, protects the eyes from the development of a secondary infection when a foreign body or contaminated particles enter. It is recommended for treatment:
    conjunctivitis;
    blepharitis;
    keratitis;
    cryocyclitis;
    keratoconjunctivitis.
Maxitrol drops are used after eye surgery: they protect against infection, accelerate the recovery of the cornea and mucous membranes. According to doctors' observations, the rehabilitation period proceeds without complications and is shortened by several days.
It should be remembered that ophthalmic drops affect only different types of bacteria. They do not destroy pathogenic fungi or anaerobic viruses, therefore, before starting the course, it is necessary to do a number of tests, do not use the solution without a doctor's prescription.

Instructions for use: method and dosage

Before use, the liquid must be thoroughly mixed by shaking the bottle several times. In order not to worsen the condition, the eyelids should be cleaned of purulent plaque with a cotton swab. Eye drops can be instilled only with clean hands, without touching the inflamed area with the dispenser. In order for them to be completely distributed and absorbed into the tissues, the patient needs to keep his eyes closed, slightly pressing his fingers on the inner corners.
The instructions for use contain the following recommendations:
    In acute inflammation with abundant exudate, drops are injected into the conjunctival sac every hour. After reducing redness and burning, the number of procedures is reduced to 4 times a day.
    With a bacterial infection, the medicine is applied after 5-6 hours, 2 drops each.
    After surgery or injury with the removal of a foreign body, the use of drops is calculated by the doctor (at least 2-3 times a day).
Maxitrol drops are recommended for children from 3 years old. With an infection of any intensity, the medicine is instilled 1 drop up to 10 times a day, gradually decreasing the intensity. The duration of the course is calculated by an ophthalmologist, but should not exceed 10 days.

Contraindications

The medicine contains a hormonal component, is a strong antibiotic, therefore Maxitrol drops are not recommended in the following situations:
    viral infections;
    fungal infection;
    acute stage of herpes zoster;
    corneal ulcers;
    recovery after major eye surgery (lens implantation);
    suppuration of an obscure nature.
The drug is prohibited in case of allergy to any component, in case of intolerance to neomycin antibiotics.

Side effects

In rare cases, Maxitrol drops provoke discomfort caused by the addition of the hormone:
    redness of the eyes;
    burning;
    swelling of the eyelids.
With prolonged use, some patients experience an increase in intraocular pressure, dysfunction of the optic nerve. Therefore, with glaucoma or cataracts, regular monitoring by a doctor is required.
With antibiotic treatment, the risk of developing a secondary infection remains: local immunity is suppressed, therefore, the ingress of a fungus or virus provokes an exacerbation with severe inflammation of the cornea.

Overdose

Maxitrol drops are intended for topical use only. With this use, a minimum amount of the hormonal component enters the bloodstream, so an overdose is excluded. Unpleasant symptoms after instillation are more likely associated with an allergic reaction, and are relieved by taking an antihistamine.

Additional Information

You can use the drug only on the recommendation of an ophthalmologist and analysis of the tear fluid for the type of bacteria. Otherwise, the risk of thinning of the cornea or sclera increases, superinfection develops. When instilled for more than 10 days, the tissues begin to get used to the composition of the drops, ceasing to respond to therapy.
Maxitrol contains benzalkonium chloride, which can provoke mucosal irritation. Therefore, when treating with a solution, it is better to refuse wearing soft lenses, be sure to remove them before instillation.
During the procedure, blurred vision and blurred vision are often observed: you should wait at least 30–40 minutes before driving a car or machinery that requires increased attention.

Interaction with other drugs

With the simultaneous use of Maxitrol drops with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, there is a risk of erosion on the cornea, wounds and injuries on the mucous membrane heal worse. If necessary, complex treatment should take a break between drugs for 15–20 minutes.

Storage conditions

Ophthalmic solution must be stored at room temperature, protected from direct sunlight. The optimum temperature, according to the manufacturer's recommendations, is from 8 to 30 ° C.
Subject to the temperature regime, drops can be stored for up to 2 years from the date of production. After opening, the medicine must be consumed within a month.

Reviews of Maxitrol drops

Elena, 34 years old
In a family with children of the same age, conjunctivitis is a common problem. I tried to treat the inflammation on my own, but only made the situation worse. The ophthalmologist has recommended Maxitrol drops to reduce inflammation and swelling. After 3 days of application, the discharge on the eyelids practically ceased, itching and burning disappeared. We used the drug for 7 days: I can note their safety and effectiveness. The only drawback is the high cost and short shelf life after opening.
Igor, 54 years old
After every cold I get inflammation and conjunctivitis. The last time the doctor prescribed Maxitrol drops for a quick effect. I can only evaluate the treatment positively: after instillation, the medicine does not bake, the burning sensation and pain from inflammation disappear, there were no side effects. Blurred vision worried a little, but it passed in half an hour without consequences.
