Form and composition

The consistency of the eye ointment Floxal is thick, uniform; color - white or light yellow; the characteristic medicinal odor is not felt. Secondary packaging for a metal tube is a cardboard box with enclosed instructions for use.
The active ingredient of Floxal eye ointment is ofloxacin, concentration 3%, 3 mg per 1 g of the composition. Excipients - lanolin, liquid paraffin, white petrolatum. Sometimes lanolin is replaced with wool fat.

Act

Ofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone derivative, has a pronounced antibacterial and bactericidal effect. Shows activity in relation to anaerobic and aerobic microorganisms, including chlamydia.
Also inhibits the activity of some gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, with the exception of: Corynebacterium spp .; Enterococcus faecalis; Staphylococcus aureus; Staphylococcus epidermidis and Streptococcus pneumoniae; Pseudomonas aeruginosa; Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, rapidly acquiring 10% resistance. Insensitive to ofloxacin Enterococcus spp.
After topical application in recommended doses, the active substance is evenly distributed in the tissues of the eye: conjunctiva, sclera, iris, vitreous and anterior chamber. The effect is felt 5 minutes after application. The maximum concentration in tissues is after 1 hour.

Indications and contraindications

Floxal eye ointment is prescribed to relieve infectious and inflammatory processes of the anterior part of the eye caused by pathogenic flora sensitive to ofloxacin: conjunctivitis, blepharitis, keratitis, dacryocystitis. It is used to treat barley, corneal ulcers, suppress chlamydial infection of the organ of vision. Used for the prevention of secondary infection after injuries and surgical interventions.
Relative contraindications for appointment: pregnancy, lactation, infection with diseases, the causative agents of which show resistance to the active ingredient. An absolute contraindication is an allergic reaction to the components of the ointment.

Method of administration and dosage

Before starting treatment, hands should be washed with soap and water. If you touch your eyes with dirty fingers, you can provoke a secondary infection. Then the eyelids are cleaned of purulent exudate with a cotton-gauze swab moistened with boiled water. The lower eyelid is slightly pulled back and a column of ointment is squeezed out, approximately 1.5 cm long, onto the conjunctiva. Release the eyelid, cover the eyes and lightly press with your fingers so that the drug is evenly distributed.
It should be laid carefully, without touching the tip of the tube to the cornea.
The treatment is carried out 2-3 times a day for 3-7 days; in case of chlamydial infection, the ointment is placed behind the eyelid up to 5 times a day. Correction of the therapeutic scheme is allowed on the basis of the clinical picture. The maximum duration of treatment is up to 2 weeks. The instructions for use indicate that for newborns, the dosage is calculated individually.
When used for preventive purposes, the frequency of treatment is reduced to 2 times a day. Duration of use is 7 days. To avoid overdose, so as not to provoke the development of resistance, the number of daily procedures should be checked with the attending physician.

Side effects

Overdose is not described. Immediately after the eyelid is inserted, blurred vision may occur, which is not a reason for canceling treatment.
If you are allergic to the main or auxiliary components, there is a burning sensation, redness of the eyelids, pain, photophobia. Lacrimation increases, an itchy rash appears on the edges of the eyelids, causing a cosmetic defect and increasing inflammation.
In isolated cases, systemic side effects were described:
    from the side of the immune system - angioedema and bronchospasm;
    from the side of the central nervous system - dizziness, migraine-like pains, heaviness in the forehead;
from the side of epithelial tissue and subcutaneous tissue - edema of the face and orbits of the eye.
Also, patients complained of dry eyes, swelling of the eyelids, very rarely - of digestive disorders. Negative symptoms were rare. If discomfort occurs immediately after application, the eyes should be rinsed with boiled water.

Special instructions of Floxal eye ointment

Before starting treatment, it is recommended to pass a test for the sensitivity of bacteria to the active ingredient. To do this, the ophthalmologist takes a scraping - a biomaterial from the conjunctival sac. The decision on the appointment is made after microbiological inoculation.
If the drops and Floxal eye ointment are used simultaneously, then the topical agent is applied after 10 minutes. The same is done with other therapeutic agents. During treatment, it is necessary to refuse to work with complex mechanisms and drive a car.
During the entire therapeutic course, it is recommended to abandon contact lenses, replacing them with glasses. To reduce the likelihood of developing photophobia, you should temporarily reduce the number of walks to avoid exposure to natural ultraviolet radiation. To do this, you need to wear dark glasses.

Pregnancy and lactation

Teratogenic effects on fetal development have not been described. But since ofloxacin enters the systemic circulation, albeit in small quantities, during pregnancy, the use of the ointment must be abandoned. In isolated cases, it is prescribed, but after evaluating the benefits for the mother with a possible risk to the development of the fetus.
During lactation, use should be avoided, since the antibacterial component is excreted in breast milk. The effect on the baby's body is unpredictable.

Treatment of children

For eye infections, the drug is prescribed for children from the age of 1 year. With chlamydial infection, it is allowed to use Floxal eye ointment from the first days of life.
The therapeutic regimen and dosage are selected individually for children, taking into account the clinical picture and physiological parameters - weight and age.

Storage

Expiration date - within 3 years from the date indicated on the package. After opening the package, use within 6 months. An open tube must be refrigerated.
The recommended storage temperature is up to 25 ° С, freezing and heating are not allowed. When stratified, the medicinal properties are not preserved. Keep out of the reach of children!

Reviews

Ophthalmologists consider Floxal a reliable and proven remedy, but they do not recommend it for independent use. If the disease is provoked by pathogenic flora that is insensitive to the antibiotic, the condition will worsen.
Patients often ask which Floxal eye ointment or Tetracycline ointment is better, as they try to buy the medicine cheaper. Allergy to ofloxacin occurs much less often, in addition, a new drug can be prescribed even to newborns, and a drug with tetracycline - only from the age of 8 years. But adults still lubricate barley with Tetracycline ointment, using a more expensive remedy if a proven drug is not effective.
Lev Gennadievich, ophthalmologist
Often I prescribe to eliminate conjunctivitis in newborns. I have not encountered allergic manifestations. Improvement occurs 3 days after the first application.
Reviews of patients who have already been treated with antimicrobial ointment:
Asia, 32 years old
Floxal eye ointment was assigned to her daughter when she was 3 years old. warned that the dosage should be reduced to 0.5 cm of the column. By the evening, the amount of purulent discharge decreased, and on the 3rd day the redness disappeared. But I applied it for another 3 days, the pediatrician said so.
