This antimicrobial drug is a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid.
Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic with a wide spectrum of action, and clavulanic acid is an inhibitor of β-lactamases that creates stable inactive complex compounds with them and protects amoxicillin from decay.

Composition and release form

It is produced in the form of a sterile powder for the preparation of injection solutions, as well as in tablet form.
Betaclav consists of a combination of two active ingredients - amoxicillin and clavulanic acid.
In the manufacture of tablets, additional components are used, such as colloidal anhydrous silicon dioxide, sodium starch glycolate, magnesium stearate, talc, etc.
In the form of powder for injection, Betaclav is available in a dosage of 1000 mg / 200 mg. In the form of tablets - in dosages of 500/125 mg and 875/125 mg.

Indications for Betaclav

This drug has a wide range of antimicrobial action. It is used to treat:
- mixed infections caused by gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms and anaerobes;
- infections of upper respiratory tract (tonsillitis, including recurrent, sinusitis, otitis media);
- respiratory tract infections (acute bronchitis, chronic exacerbation, pneumonia);
- infections of bone and connective tissue (including chronic osteomyelitis);
- infections of the skin and soft tissues (including phlegmon, wound infection);
- diseases that are transmitted sexually (gonorrhea, chancroid);
- urinary tract infections (including cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis);
- gynecological infections (including salpingitis, salpingoophoritis, endometritis, septic abortion, pelvioperitonitis);
- infections and postoperative complications of the abdominal cavity.
Also used for the prevention of infections during surgical interventions.
This drug has a wide spectrum of antimicrobial action. However, it is active against amoxicillin-sensitive microorganisms, as well as relatively resistant bacteria that synthesize β-lactamase, both gram-positive (streptococci, staphylococci, enterococci, others) and gram-negative (Klebsiella, Shigella, Salmonella, others).


Contraindications for Betaclav

It is not used in case of hypersensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, a history of antibiotics of the penicillin group or other components of Betaclav.
Contraindicated use for cholestatic jaundice or hepatitis, due to the administration of penicillin antibiotics in the past.
The tablet form of Betaclav is not used to treat children under 12 years of age.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

If there is clear evidence, this drug can also be used during pregnancy, but only if the estimated benefit from taking exceeds the possible harm done to the woman and child.
Betaclav passes into breast milk, so the lactation at the time of treatment must be suspended.

Dosage and administration

Betaclav used in a dose that depends on the age, severity of infection, body weight, the state of the body.
The injection solution is made by qualified medical personnel and is administered only intravenously - jet (3-5 minutes) or drip (30-40 minutes).
For adults and children over 12 years old and weighing more than 40 kg, the usual dose for infections of moderate severity and for prevention before surgical procedures is 1.2 grams in total (1000 mg of amoxicillin per 200 mg of clavulanate) every 8 hours, for severe infections the same dosage every 4-6 hours. The maximum single dose - 6 grams in total, the maximum daily dose - 7.2 grams in total.
Children from 3 months to 12 years prescribed Betaclav at the rate of 25/5 grams per 1 kg of patient weight, every 6-8 hours.
Children up to 3 months:
- with a weight of more than 4 kg - 25/5 grams per 1 kg of weight, every 8 hours;
- with a weight of up to 4 kg - the same dosage, but the introduction no more than every 12 hours;
- premature and newborns - 30 mg 1 kg of weight, the interval - 12 hours.
The maximum daily dose for children is 45 mg per 1 kg of weight.
In severe cases of renal failure, the first injection corresponds to 1.2 mg (total of amoxicillin and clavulanate), with subsequent injections a reduced dose is administered twice.
Over the course of treatment, the patient can be transferred to the parenteral form (tablets), as decided by the doctor.
Tablet form:
- adults and children over 12 years old - 1 tablet 500/125 mg 2 times a day. For severe infections, 875/125 twice a day.


Overdose

Overdose with Betaclav can cause disorders of the digestive tract (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), as well as stimulation of the central nervous system (agitation, convulsions, insomnia).
Symptom treatment and hemodialysis are recommended.

Side effects

Side effects are most often observed when using the tablet form of Betaclav. Most common:
- disorders of the gastrointestinal tract (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting);
- allergic reactions (rash, urticaria, anaphylaxis, allergic vasculitis, erythema multiforme);
- agranulocytosis, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, hemolytic anemia;
- dizziness, headache.
Occasionally, convulsions, hyperactivity, antibiotic-associated colitis, interstitial nephritis, and hematuria were observed.
Side effects are reduced if taken in tablet form at the beginning of a meal.

Terms and conditions of storage

The powder for the preparation of injections is stored for up to 2 years at a temperature not exceeding 25 ° C. The tablets are stored at the same temperature, but the shelf life is 3 years.
