Composition and mechanism of action of Microlax

Microlax is a combined drug that belongs to the group of laxatives. Designed for rectal administration. A viscous, colorless solution containing air bubbles is placed in a micro enema made of polymer soft material. The volume of the contents of one tube is 5 ml.
The basis of the medication is:
    Sorbitol. It draws fluid into the lumen of the small intestine, due to which the stool accumulated in it increases in volume and softens accordingly. At the same time, sorbitol irritates receptors located in the mucous layer of the walls of the large intestine, due to which peristalsis is activated.
    Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate. Thins the contents in the intestines.
    Sodium citrate. Breaks down feces into small particles and displaces water from them.
The complex composition of Microlax provides a quick liquefaction of feces and enhances peristalsis, which determines the laxative effect of the drug. Defecation occurs in most cases within 15 minutes.
Rectal administration of the drug does not lead to the penetration of its components inside. That is, Microlax acts only at the local level, which ensures its safety and the possibility of using it to eliminate constipation in newborns, pregnant women in the early and late stages of bearing a child and lactating women, people with chronic pathologies.

When can I use Microlax?

In the instructions for use of the drug, constipation having a different cause of development is indicated as indications. Doctors often prescribe microclysters for those with prolonged absence of stool accompanied by encopresis, i.e. fecal incontinence. The drug is suitable for eliminating constipation in pregnant girls, regardless of gestational age. It is possible to resort to its use during breastfeeding, since the active components do not penetrate into breast milk.
Microlax for bowel cleansing is prescribed before sigmoidoscopy, radiological and endoscopic examinations of the gastrointestinal tract. Often, a mini enema is used instead of the usual cleansing enema before childbirth and abdominal operations.
Microlax facilitates bowel movement and, accordingly, relieves discomfort during hemorrhoids. The use of an enema for this disease avoids the formation of hemorrhoidal nodes due to straining and their lowering below the anus.
    Microclyster does not eliminate the main reason for the lack of stool, so this tool can only be used as a drug for emergency care.
Microclysters in children can be prescribed immediately after birth. Parents often resort to its use in cases where the newborn cannot be relieved due to the transition to artificial nutrition, with colic and problems with digesting food.
Microlax through how much it acts in adults - this question primarily concerns those who have defecation accompanied by discomfort and pain. The effect of relaxation, as the reviews show, in most cases begins to manifest itself after 15-20 minutes. But sometimes bowel movement occurs after 40-60 minutes. This is considered normal and does not require other measures.
If after 1-2 hours there is no result, then an adult can re-do microclyster. However, it must be borne in mind that the constituent components of the drug act only if there is fecal content in the rectum. Subject to strict diets and starvation, the intake of food residues in the colon slows down, and the body may need to defecate every 3-5 days.

Enema benefits

Laxatives intended for oral use begin to act after a minimum of 4-5 hours. In contrast, rectal staging of Microlax leads to bowel movements almost immediately, which accordingly quickly improves well-being and eliminates discomfort in the shortest possible time. But this is not the only advantage of Microlax. Other advantages of the drug include:
    lack of toxic effects on internal organs;
    the possibility of using microclysters in any trimester of pregnancy;
    lack of age restrictions - the drug is suitable for eliminating constipation in infants and young children;
    a small number of contraindications;
    the convenience of setting the enema - a thin and semi-rigid applicator allows you to enter it into the anus correctly and quickly
Microlax is not addictive, can be used periodically when episodic constipation occurs. Allowed and short courses of daily use of the drug, but keep in mind that for the full restoration of the intestines may require the use of other drugs.
    Microlax is also convenient in that each container contains a single dose, so there is no need to determine the amount of the drug.
Microlax does not interact with systemic medicines. This is due to the fact that the components of the drug act only at the level of the intestine and do not enter the bloodstream. With the simultaneous use of other drugs intended for rectal administration, you need to wait until they are empty before setting. All components of Microlax come out with feces. Then it is already possible to insert candles with anti-inflammatory, regenerating or analgesic properties without fear.

Enema Rules

The effectiveness of using Microlax is largely determined by full compliance with the rules for the introduction of a laxative solution. Before the procedure, it is necessary to remove the enema from the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes or warm it in your hands a little, this will reduce the likelihood of discomfort in the anus and rectum during administration.
The following recommendations should be followed:
    rinse the area of the anus with warm water, dry the skin;
    treat your hands with an antiseptic or wash them well with soap;
    break off the protective seal at the tip of the tip;
    squeeze a drop of solution from the package, grease it with a pipette;
    insert the tip along its entire length into the rectum (for adults);
    squeeze out the contents by clicking on the tube;
    remove the enema without loosening the pressure on the tube body.
An enema is administered predominantly lying on its side. It is more convenient for some people to put the medicine in a supine position, while the legs should be bent at the knees. Allowed and setting means and squatting. That is, you can choose any convenient way of setting a mini enema, applicable at home.
After the procedure, you need to restrain the urge to empty for at least 5 minutes. This will completely soften all accumulated masses, which means that during bowel movements the intestines will be freed from all contents. After microclysters, repeated urge is possible, usually they stop within an hour.

Contraindications and adverse reactions

An absolute contraindication to the formulation of microclysters Microlax is hypersensitivity to one or more components of the drug. Proctologists do not recommend using any laxatives with:
    intestinal obstruction;
    rectal bleeding;
    dehydration.
Caution when using the drug should be shown to people who follow a diet with a sodium restriction and have severe violations of kidney and heart disease. Intestinal obstruction is indicated by the absence of stool and gas for several days, severe cramping pains in the lower abdomen, weakness, sweating, a drop in blood pressure, and vomiting.
Adverse reactions against the background of the enema are rare. Most often, patients notice a burning sensation in the rectum. In rare cases, rashes appear on the skin around the anus, and irritation occurs.
Burning does not require discontinuation of the drug, it completely disappears after the release of intestinal contents. When fixing other undesirable reactions, it is worth abandoning the further use of Microlax. To reduce the intensity of symptoms, you need to rinse the area of the anus with warm water, dry and grease with an ointment with regenerating or antihistamine properties.

Special conditions

The sealed Microlax tube should be stored at a temperature not exceeding 25 degrees. It is allowed to store it in the refrigerator, but before putting an enema, it is better to warm it to room temperature. The duration of storage of the drug from the time of release is 5 years.
    If the medicine is not fully used, then it should be immediately thrown away, since the therapeutic activity of the contents when the package is opened is significantly reduced.
You should not get carried away with the frequent production of mini enemas. The manufacturer recommends using Microlax 1 or, in extreme cases, 2 times a day. An increase in the frequency of formulation of a rectal agent leads to the development of "lazy bowel syndrome".
This is a condition in which peristalsis occurs only after stimulation of the receptors. With persistent and prolonged constipation, it is necessary to undergo an examination and establish the main cause of the problem, and then, starting from it, choose the treatment.
