Enterofuryl is a drug from the group of broad-spectrum antimicrobial drugs. The drug does not have a systemic effect, it is prescribed for the treatment of infectious diarrhea. The active ingredient is nifuroxazide, a 5-nitrofuran derivative. Enterofuryl has a bactericidal, bacteriostatic effect, is active against many causative agents of gastrointestinal infections. The antimicrobial effect of the drug is dose-dependent, while low, medium doses have a bacteriostatic effect, high - bactericidal.
The bacteriostatic effect of Enterofuryl is associated with inhibition of the activity of dehydrogenase, while the biosynthesis of the necessary compounds in the bacterial cell is disrupted. As a result, the respiratory chain is blocked, the tricarboxylic acid cycle is inhibited, and the bacterial cell loses its ability to multiply.
The bactericidal effect of Enterofuryl is due to the ability of high doses of the drug to destructively affect the membrane of bacterial cells. As a result of the violation of the integrity of the cell membrane, the death of the bacterium occurs.
Also Enterofuryl is able to inhibit the production of exotoxins by pathogenic bacteria, as a result of which irritation of the cells of the intestinal epithelium decreases and the production of fluid into the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract decreases.
By increasing the phagocytic activity the drug activates the immune system.
The drug does not have a depressing effect on non-pathogenic flora, and therefore dysbacteriosis does not occur during its use.
After oral administration, the drug is not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, there is no systemic effect. A high concentration of the drug is created in the intestine. Enterofuryl is excreted in the feces.
Due to the high clinical effectiveness, reviews of the drug are positive. In addition to the good effect in bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal tract, the drug also reduces the risk of bacterial superinfection in viral diarrhea, therefore, in this pathology, the appointment of Enterofuryl is also advisable.
