What is bisacodyl

Bisacodyl belongs to the group of contact laxatives prescribed for impaired bowel function.
The product is available in solid form for oral administration. Bisacodyl tablets are round, yellow, come in a greenish or orange tint. On top of the dragee is coated with a sugar shell, which dissolves only when it reaches the intestine.
The active substance is bisacodyl, 5 mg in one tablet. To obtain the shell, sucrose, a yellow quinoline dye, was used.

How does the drug work?

The main pharmacological property is laxative. The therapeutic effect of the main substance is aimed at liquefying feces in the large intestine.
    Penetrating into the intestine, it causes an increased intake of water from internal media into the intestinal cavity.
    Prevents reverse absorption of water through the epithelium.
    Softens feces.
    Accelerates intestinal motility.
    Promotes rapid evacuation of fecal matter from all parts of the colon.
Active secretion and peristalsis is provided due to irritation of receptors located in the mucosa.
How long Bisacodyl tablets act depends on the time they are taken. If you take the laxative during the day, the effect occurs after 6 hours, if you drink at night ─ after 8-12 hours.
    Attention! While taking the tablets, their integrity must not be violated. They should be delivered through the digestive tract to the place of accumulation of feces. Each tablet is coated with a special membrane that does not respond to hydrochloric acid in the stomach, bile, and pancreatic secretion in the duodenum. Once in the large intestine, in an alkaline pH environment, the membrane dissolves, the active substance is released and begins to act.
The substance is not absorbed into the systemic circulation, is excreted naturally in the form of decay products under the influence of water.

Indications for appointment

Bisacodyl tablets are intended for short-term use. They eliminate the symptom, but do not affect the cause of the violation of physiological bowel movement.
Instructions for the use of tablets provide for their appointment in such conditions:
    hypotonic, atonic constipation - a violation of muscle contractions, a decrease in the tone of a certain section of the large intestine;
    difficult act of defecation in women after the birth of a child, the elderly, patients after surgical treatment;
    regulation and stabilization of stool in people with chronic hemorrhoids, anal fissures, inflammation of the rectum (proctitis).
Also indications for the appointment of Bisacodyl Hemofarm - preparation for instrumental studies of the lower gastrointestinal tract, operations on the digestive organs.

In what cases is the medicine contraindicated

Discomfort and abdominal pain, which are often associated with constipation, are not always a reason for taking the drug. There are serious and dangerous conditions in which the tablets are contraindicated:
    intestinal obstruction;
    acute inflammatory processes of an infectious or non-infectious nature ─ hemorrhoids, proctitis;
    pinched hernia;
    bleeding in the digestive tract;
    “Acute abdomen” ─ appendicitis, perforated ulcer, peritonitis;
    acute infectious diseases, poisoning, which are accompanied by sharp abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting;
    Crohn's disease ─ non-specific chronic inflammation of all parts of the digestive tract;
    ulcerative colitis;
    severe dehydration.
You can not take bisacodyl with spastic constipation, individual intolerance to the individual components. The medicine is not used in pediatric practice up to 4 years.
    There is no evidence of whether alcohol interacts with the drug. In order to avoid unforeseen complications while taking Bisacodyl, it is recommended to refrain from drinking alcohol.
According to official instructions, it is not recommended to prescribe the drug during pregnancy, since there is no data on the safety of admission for women. The risk of toxic (teratogenic) effects on the fetus, its growth and development is unlikely. Therefore, tablets are prescribed with caution during pregnancy to eliminate constipation. If necessary, they can be replaced by Bisacodyl in the form of rectal suppositories for topical application.
During breastfeeding, the drug is also prescribed with caution, only for strict indications.

Drug regimen

For constipation, tablets are prescribed morning and evening before bedtime to achieve therapeutic efficacy. They are strictly forbidden to chew, crush, grind into powder. Drink plenty of fluids, at least 1 cup. Eating does not affect the activity of the drug.
Bisacodyl is recommended for use according to the following scheme:
    adults and adolescents ─ 1-3 tab. at one time;
    children from 8 to 14 years old ─ 1-2 tablets. 2 times a day;
    children from 4 to 8 years ─ 1 tab. in the morning and in the evening.
In preparation for instrumental studies (x-rays, endoscopy), before surgery on the digestive tract, a laxative is prescribed a day before the upcoming diagnosis, treatment and 2 hours before the manipulation. Adults need to drink 2 tablets once, for children under 10 years - 1 tablet.
    Attention! If possible, exclude the daily use of bisacodyl. If there is such a need, the course of taking the tablets should not exceed 7 days.

Possible side effects and overdose

In most cases, reviews about the drug are positive. The tablets are well tolerated by patients, do not cause general serious conditions.
Some people may experience cramping, colic, pain, and abdominal discomfort. This is due to irritation of the intestinal wall. The manifestations of dyspepsia are intensified - increased gas formation, loose stools, drying out of the oral mucosa, thirst, nausea, and sometimes vomiting.
If the medicine is taken for a long time, more than 10 days develop stable intestinal atony, inflammation of its mucous membrane, melanosis (accumulation of pigment in the intestine, which stains the feces in a dark brown color).
Rare side effects that bisacodyl tablets cause:
    general weakness, dizziness;
    peripheral vascular spasms;
    spasms of the calf muscles;
    allergies ─ skin itching, rashes, angioedema.
In elderly patients, there is a violation of coordination of movement, a drop in blood pressure when changing the position of the body from horizontal to vertical, impotence, impaired water-salt balance in the body.
    In the case of the use of high doses, the tablets enhance the negative effects of the gastrointestinal tract - abdominal pain, cramping, dyspeptic disorders, salt imbalance. If you use the product for a long time, this will lead to chronic diarrhea, the formation of kidney stones.
Correction of this condition includes gastric lavage, normalization of electrolyte balance, symptomatic treatment.
