Indications for use

Tetracycline ointment is used when a bacterial infection or chlamydia occurs in the eyes and eyelids.
The drug helps with the following diseases:
    blepharitis - an infectious and inflammatory lesion of the eyelids;
    blepharoconjunctivitis - an infectious and inflammatory disease of the eyelids and conjunctival sac;
    keratitis - inflammatory damage to the cornea, which is accompanied by severe pain and opacity;
    conjunctivitis - an infection of the conjunctival sac;
    keratoconjunctivitis - simultaneous damage to the cornea and conjunctival sac;
    meibomite (barley) - an inflammatory disease of the eyelids with damage to the sebaceous glands;
    trachoma - damage to the conjunctiva and cornea due to chlamydial infection;
    rosacea of the eye - pustular formations, accompanied by vasodilation;
    erosive and ulcerative lesions of the mucous membrane of the eyelids.
    Tetracycline ointment should only be used if infection is confirmed. If it is used for a viral or fungal infection, the disease will intensify, it will have an unfavorable outcome or complications.

Composition

The main component of the ointment is tetracycline, which is contained in a concentration of 10 mg. Additional substances are lanolin and petroleum jelly. They form a creamy consistency of the preparation.

Instructions for use

Tetracycline ointment is used topically. Oral use is prohibited, it will cause dyspeptic reactions (nausea, vomiting, stool changes). The thick form is used for the area of the conjunctival sac and eyelids.
To achieve the maximum effect, the drug is used for a long time. Therefore, it is used before bedtime. It accumulates in the tissues of the eyelids, the conjunctival sac, causing long-term destruction of pathogenic microorganisms.
Squeeze the contents of the bottle onto a cotton swab the size of half a pea.
It is smeared on the affected area of the eyes, depending on the disease:
    outer side of the eyelid;
    inner side of the century;
    inner corner of the eyes with conjunctivitis;
    skin around the eyes.
In case of damage to the inner region of the eyelids and eyes, the drug is placed immediately from the tube onto the mucous membrane, pulling the lower eyelid. After application, clouding occurs, a temporary decrease in visual acuity.
If the drug is prescribed during the daytime, the use of lenses is temporarily stopped. The agent will accumulate in the CL structure, causing their damage. The duration of therapy is determined by the doctor at the examination. Most often, the period is 1-2 weeks. With trachoma, the period increases to two months. In severe trachoma, the drug is used for more than 3 months.
If the patient has a mild or moderate illness, the drug is prescribed once a day before bedtime. If the disease is more serious, the time intervals are shortened. The product is applied every 2-4 hours. This will prevent the increased reproduction of pathogenic microflora.

For children

There have not been sufficient trials on the use of Tetracycline Ointment in children. Pediatricians believe that the drug can be used from 1 year of age if the benefits outweigh the possible side effects.
    Do not use products for newborns. In this case, there will be side reactions in the form of itching, inflammation, redness, swelling of the mucous membrane and skin around the eyes.

Special instructions

When treating with antibacterial drugs, patients need to know that tetracycline acts on a certain number of bacteria. Antibiotic susceptibility testing should be done when infection occurs.
    If no therapeutic effect occurs during therapy, you must consult a doctor. He will change the drug to an analogue.
Tetracycline ointment causes blurred vision for a short period of time after application. Therefore, it is recommended to use it before bed. If, after application, the patient gets behind the wheel, he should check the clarity of vision. The same recommendation applies to work with heavy equipment or hazardous chemicals.
    During the period of therapy with antibacterial ointment, doctors advise replacing the wearing of contact lenses with glasses.
If the patient uses lenses that are designed for more than one day, the drug will accumulate in the porous structure. Lenses will lose their function, become unusable.

Interaction with other medications

The only drugs with which it is not recommended to use tetracycline are glucocorticosteroids. The antibiotic enhances their action, which can cause hormonal imbalance or excessive suppression of the immune system.
No cross-reactions were found with the rest of the drugs.

Pregnancy and lactation

Experiments on pregnant women and women with lactation have not been performed in sufficient volume. Therefore, all adverse reactions are not fully understood.
The medicine is applied topically, therefore it is practically not absorbed into the systemic circulation. It is possible to use the remedy if the effect of it exceeds the possible side effects.

Side effects

All drugs belonging to antibacterial groups have side effects. They appear if the medicine is used for other purposes or in a self-prescribed dosage. There are cases of individual drug intolerance.
Tetracycline has the following side effects:
    allergic reactions in the form of itching, burning, redness, swelling of the eyes;
    the appearance of resistance of the pathogen to the ointment when using an excessive dosage or applying for more than 10 days;
    fungal infection of the eyes when using the ointment for more than 10 days or reduced immune function;
    dyspeptic reactions (nausea, vomiting, changes in stool);
    increased thrombus formation;
    increased sensitivity to bright light.
    When one or more side effects from the list appear, the use of the drug is discontinued, they consult a doctor.

Contraindications

Tetracycline is contraindicated in the following cases:
    an allergic reaction to the components of the drug;
    cross-allergy to other groups of antibiotics;
    fungal infection of the eyes;
    age up to 1 year;
    acute renal and hepatic failure.

Overdose

There were no cases of drug overdose.
But when using a medicine above the norm, bacteria always develop resistance to the active substance. If the infection re-penetrates, the tetracycline ointment will not work, the doctor will have to prescribe a more serious antibiotic.
To avoid negative reactions, you should strictly adhere to the doctor's instructions, do not use the drug in excess of the norm.
