Characteristic

Buckthorn bark contains antraglycosides and other biologically active substances.

Description

A mixture of yellowish brown bark particles with brown, dark brown, gray-brown, dark gray, gray, yellow-orange, reddish-brown blotches. The smell is faint. The taste of water extract is bitter.

Pharmachologic effect

Infusion of buckthorn bark has a laxative effect, due to the presence of anthra-glycosides, which irritate the receptors of the mucous membrane of the large intestine. The laxative effect usually occurs 8-12 hours after taking the drug.

Indications for use

Chronic constipation.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Buckthorn bark; constipation of neurogenic and endocrine origin, spastic constipation, intestinal obstruction, acute abdominal syndrome, appendicitis, enteritis, colitis, metrorrhagia, acute febrile states; pregnancy, the period of breastfeeding, children under 12 years old.

Use during pregnancy and during breastfeeding

The use of Buckthorn bark is contraindicated during pregnancy and during breastfeeding.

Dosage and administration

4 filter bags (6.0 g) are placed in a glass or enameled dish, pour 100 ml (1/2 cup) boiling water, cover and leave for 15 minutes, periodically pressing the bags with a spoon, then squeeze them. The volume of the obtained infusion is adjusted to 100 ml with boiling water.
The infusion is taken orally in a warm form by adults and children over 12 years of age, 1/2 cup at night and in the morning. The course of treatment is 1-2 weeks.
Before use, it is recommended to shake the infusion.

Side effect

Allergic reactions (skin rash), abdominal discomfort (flatulence, spastic pain, nausea) are possible.

Overdose

With an overdose, colicky abdominal pain, tenesmus, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea are possible. Treatment: symptomatic.

Special instructions

With prolonged use of buckthorn preparations, addiction and weakening or the absence of a laxative effect may develop, so it is advisable to alternate them with other laxatives. It is possible to stain urine in yellow, which does not require discontinuation of the drug. Long-term administration of the drug without consulting a doctor is not recommended.
