Pharmacodynamics

Benatex is a local contraceptive drug. It has a spermicidal effect, in addition, it has antiseptic, antifungal, antiprotozoal properties, inactivates the Herpes simplex virus.
Benzalkonium chloride is active against gram-positive (including Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp.), Gram-negative (including Proteus spp., Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella spp., Neisseria gonorrhoeae) and anaerobic bacteria.
Benatex is also active against bacterial strains that exhibit resistance to antibiotics and other chemotherapeutic drugs; inhibits hyaluronidase and plasmacoagulase of staphylococci.
The spermicidal effect of benzalkonium chloride is based on the ability to damage the membranes of spermatozoa (at the beginning of the flagella, later on the head). This leads to the impossibility of fertilization of the egg with a damaged sperm. After the introduction of the gel, suppository or tablet, the effect develops after 3, 5 and 8-10 minutes, respectively.
Benatex is active in the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (including gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, chlamydia). It has no effect on the hormonal cycle and the normal microflora of the vagina (including the Dederlein stick).

Pharmacokinetics

With intravaginal administration, Benatex is practically not absorbed, the drug is removed with normal physiological secretions and simple washing with water.

In some cases, allergic reactions occur. Possible itching and burning in the vagina and / or the partner's penis, contact dermatitis, painful urination.

Special instructions

Benatex can be used in conjunction with a condom, intrauterine device or vaginal diaphragm.
To increase the effectiveness of the drug, you should strictly adhere to the recommendations for its use.
After intercourse, vaginal use of hygiene products (douching, irrigation or washing with soapy water) is not recommended in order to avoid loss of the contraceptive effect, since soap destroys the active substance of the drug. An external toilet of the genitals is possible 2 hours before sexual intercourse and within 2 hours after it, but only with clean water.
Similarly, within 2 hours after using the drug, you can not take a bath, swim in the pool, sea and other bodies of water.
If it is necessary to treat vaginal diseases and / or the use of other intravaginal drugs, it is possible to start or resume contraception with Benatex only after the end of the therapeutic course.

Application during pregnancy and lactation

Benatex is a contraceptive drug, and therefore is not used during pregnancy. If conception occurred against the background of contraception with benzalkonium chloride, its effect on the course of pregnancy has not been established.
Benzalkonium chloride is not released during lactation, so the drug can be used during breastfeeding.

Drug interactions

Any drug for intravaginal use can reduce the local spermicidal effect of benzalkonium chloride. The same goes for soaps and solutions containing it.
Iodine solutions (including 0.1% iodonate solution) inactivate Benatex.

Reviews

In reviews about Benatex, most women say that they were satisfied with the drug. They note the affordable cost, ease of use, and safety of use. Another advantage is the possibility of using the drug during lactation and the absence of the need for course or constant use.
Some women point out that Benatex, unlike hormonal drugs, does not provide 100% protection against pregnancy. Also, the development of burning and itching is considered a disadvantage, as well as the fact that the product is poorly washed out.
