Composition and form of release

Ksilen drops manufactured by LENS-Pharm is present on pharmacy shelves in various dosages and dosage forms:
    0.1% spray and drops - for patients older than 6 years;
    0.05% spray and drops - for children 2-6 years old.
The active substance of the drug is xylometazoline hydrochloride.

Indications for use

Acute respiratory infections with signs of a runny nose (rhinitis), allergic acute rhinitis, sinus inflammation (sinusitis), middle ear inflammation (with otitis media used as part of a combination treatment to reduce swelling of the nasopharynx mucosa), used to reduce swelling of the mucous membrane, facilitates examination of the nasal cavity (rhinoscopy).

Mechanism of action

The active substance of the drug is Xylometazoline hydrochloride. It is an alpha-selective agonist. In small doses it acts on alpha1-adrenergic receptors, in large doses - on alpha2-adrenergic receptors. In contact with the nasal mucosa, reduces blood vessels, reduces the intensity of inflammation and exudation. It relieves the nose of redness and swelling. Facilitates breathing through the nose during rhinitis.
With nasal use, xylometazoline almost does not enter the bloodstream. It is well tolerated even in people with high sensitivity of the nasal mucosa

Instructions for use

According to the instructions for use, Ksilen drops are intended for instillation into the nasal passages. The duration of the course of treatment is determined by the otolaryngologist, however, it should not exceed 5 days. With prolonged use, the body develops resistance and addiction to Xylometazoline, which requires more frequent use in increased doses.
    Dosage schedule for adults and children over 6 years: during the day from 2 to 3 times.
    Dose range for adults and children over 6 years: 1-2 drops of 0.1% Ksilen.
    Dosage schedule for age 2-6 years: per day 1-2 times.
    Dose range for the age category from 2 to 6 years: 1-2 drops of Ksilen 0.05%.
If, after 5 days from the start of the course of therapy, the patient's condition has not improved, then it is necessary to consult a doctor again to select an alternative agent based on another active component.


Contraindications

The use of Ksilen is contraindicated in the presence of such diseases:
    Atrophic rhinitis;
    Angle-closure glaucoma;
    Severe atherosclerosis;
    Arterial hypertension;
    Tachycardia;
    Surgical interventions on the meninges (in history);
    Hyperthyroidism;
    Hypersensitivity to the components of the product.
With extreme caution, xylometazoline is prescribed to children under 2 years of age.
With breastfeeding and pregnancy, the drug is used only with strict adherence to the recommended doses, after a careful ratio of the expected benefits and the risk of adverse reactions.

Side effects of Ksilen drops

In rare cases, the occurrence of:
     sneezing attacks
     excessive secretion of mucus;
     dry mucous membranes;
     increased swelling;
     tingling and burning sensations at the injection site, that is, paresthesia.
The following systemic disorders very rarely develop:
     increase in blood pressure;
     tachycardia and arrhythmia;
     insomnia;
     headache;
     visual impairment;
     depression.
